Position Description

 

A vacancy exists for a Hydro Team Member Erne Generating Stations. The Erne Hydro-Electric power stations are important installations on the River Erne operating to the highest levels of safety and reliability.

 

The River Erne is around 60 miles/100km in length, rising in County Cavan, flowing through Cavan, Fermanagh and Donegal. The concrete Hydro-Electric Dams  and Earthen embankment dams are Category A structures impounding the water for the generation of electricity. Category A Structures are those whose breach could result in loss of life. Assaroe Reservoir was formed by the construction of 1km of Category A Earthen Embankment Structures to the south of the River between Cliff and Cathaleen’s Fall concrete Dams, just outside the town of Ballyshannon.

 

The Hydro Team member will contribute to and be supported by the full station team in working across all functional areas within the stations including maintenance, operations, technical services, civil, supervision and contractor management. The successful candidate will be required to work to the level of their competence to carry out their duties. They will be required to work autonomously, be flexible and be a self starter. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others is required.

 

The Hydro Team Member will be primarily carrying out Bank Ranging duties and miscellaneous maintenance duties at Erne Stations and grounds as required and directed by the manager. Bank Ranging is an essential surveillance and measurement activity carried out 7 days a week on the Category A Earthen Embankments and Concrete Dams at Erne Stations and associated grounds. Working times and days may vary and will be determined by business needs including Bank Holidays.  

 

A key component of the role is reading water levels and taking various dam-safety related readings such as measuring leakage water flows, therefore the successful candidate must possess a high level of accuracy in these areas. All readings are inputted into a computer software package for plotting and monitoring trends.

 

The successful candidate will receive training to attain and maintain competencies.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Responsibilities will cover the items below:

 

  • Delivering and supporting work across all areas of the stations.
  • Working safely, flexibly and to competence as part of the overall team.
  • Measuring springs, recording levels and monitoring earthen embankment and concrete dams which are required to be walked daily over undulating terrain.
  • Cleaning water gauges or intake screens as required during bankranging duties.
  • Gathering rainfall and Met Eireann data.
  • Miscellaneous maintenance and admin duties.
  • Reporting observations.
  • The successful candidate will be required to work as part of a team.
  • All weekends are to be covered on the inspection regime across a team. The successful candidate will be required to work 1 to 2 weekends per month depending on the team roster.
  • Support to sister Hydro station in Gweedore.
  • General site services and maintenance works e.g. concrete works, property repairs, equipment checks, waste management etc.
  • Fixed and mobile plant operation, equipment checks, deliveries and collections.
  • Assisting Operation and Maintenance Hydro team members.
  • General administration duties including ordering and invoicing.
  • Use of ESB computer systems for maintenance and administration duties.
  • Carry out authorised roles under the Safety Rules as required.

 

 

Experience and Qualifications

 

Essential

 

  • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Awareness
  • Applicants must be proficient in the use of computer systems
  • Applicants should be aware that Bank Ranging involves a high degree of walking during all weather conditions and must be comfortable to carry out same
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Be capable of working as part of a flexible team
  • Hold a full valid driving license
  • Full B drivers license

 

Desirable

 

  • Experience in industrial plants and /or construction or building maintenance works
  • Relevant CSCS tickets and qualifications
  • Awareness of Electrical Generation Safety Rules

This position will be based in Erne Generating Stations, Belleek Road, Ballyshannon, County Donegal F94 F767.

 

 

Reporting To

 

Reporting to Civil works Supervisor.

Salary

 

€31,200 - €37,350
