Position Description

 

ESB Trading is a section of the Generation and Trading division of ESB and trades the output from the ESB portfolio in GB and Ireland through various trading strategies and time horizons. ESB Prompt Trading desks operate across all short-term Power and Gas Markets in to optimise ESB positions in these markets and to maximise value from the ESB generation portfolio.

 

We are currently seeking to recruit a Gas & Power Trader to work on our integrated Gas & ISEM Prompt Trading team in ROI. On the prompt desk, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to trade the largest generation portfolio in the ISEM market and help shape ESB Trading strategy as the market develops.  This will include optimising our assets in the OTC, Day Ahead, Intra-day, and Balancing Markets. The Prompt Trading group operates on a 24 x 7 shift basis to manage and optimise value from gas and power positions against the generation business assets with gas and power traded through the UK and ROI Markets.

 

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to gain valuable insight to the development of the ISEM market and will have responsibly to contribute towards the successful delivery of the financial targets in a trading business.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Responsibilities will cover the items below:

 

  • Working as part of a 24/7 operations team on a full shift rotation basis.
  • Dispatching our generation portfolio in the optimal manner.
  • Maximising the economic benefit from trading the power and gas positions
  • Maximising revenue through the Balancing Mechanism by strategic profiling of the asset portfolio.
  • Re-optimising traded positions whilst expertly managing our exposure to volatile and punitive system imbalance charges.
  • Continuous re-assessment of our supply/demand position and risks during the day, taking account of potential plant failures and volatile market conditions.
  • Making timely commercial decisions based on available real time information and informed judgement.
  • Assist in the preparedness and readiness activities for the future state and activities of the group.
  • Manage interactions with stations, other market participants and other functions within ESB.

 

 

The Candidate

 

  • You will be an excellent team member but self-motivated with the ability to work on your own initiative.
  • You will be able to demonstrate excellent communication and reporting skills to provide effective commentary at shift handover and to the management team.
  • Excellent and timely decision-making skills and judgement are essential whilst ensuring half-hourly deadlines are met.
  • You will be able to demonstrate a positive attitude to change with an ability to quickly adapt to dynamic trading and operating system conditions.
  • Experience in the use of MS Office tools such as MS Excel and word would be an advantage.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

 

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the economic dispatch of power stations and drivers of the power and gas markets.
  • Have good level of numerical, IT, analytical and communications skills.
  • Experience in power and gas trading and operations.

 

Desirable

 

  • Ability to quickly translate complex analysis and accurate interpretation of electricity market and system data thus ensuring optimal trading and asset profiling decisions are taken.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Essential

 

  • 3rd level qualification with a strong focus on numerical, IT and analytical content, or equivalent, or equivalent work experience.

 

 

Location

 

Based in ESB Head Office, Dublin.

 

 

Reporting to

 

The successful candidate will report to the ROI Prompt Trading Manager.

Salary

 

€55,700 - €65,500
