Position Description


Engineering and Major Projects (EMP) is responsible for the delivery of major projects, project management capability and engineering services to internal and external customers. In addition, this business will be responsible for developing and maintaining engineering capability, and the provision of common technical systems, processes and contracts across ESB Group.


The role of the Contracts Specialist within Engineering and Major Projects (EMP) is to deliver value creation in the development and construction of ESB’s portfolio by structuring transactions, negotiating commercial contracts, and bringing commercial considerations to the forefront of all activities. The Contract Specialist will support contract practitioners in the use of FIDIC suite to modern international-best-practice. The role will also support ESB International and development of contracts and contracting strategies.


The Contracts Specialist will support negotiations and contract management including: construction contracts with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM’s) and specialist suppliers, Engineer Procure and Construct (EPC) contracts, operations & maintenance contracts and other Services Agreements.


Travel both with ROI, UK and International will be part of this role.



Key Responsibilities


  • Enhance the commercial focus of existing & future contracts to ensure a suitable risk and reward allocation is achieved between contracting parties.
  • Involved in the role of management of the professional services framework
  • Develop and implement innovative solutions to add value within construction and other contracts for ESB projects.
  • Provide expert contract support to contract practitioners within ESB Business units
  • Development and implementation of training modules to support contract practitioners.
  • Leading contract management, negotiations, claims etc.
  • Manage the contracting lessons captured process in the development new contracts.
  • Advise the project managers in relation to contractual issues, including variations and claims, in consultation with legal and insurance advisors
  • Manage key stakeholders within existing business units
  • Provide commercial input into procurement / contracting strategies and evaluations for construction and other contracts.
  • Continuously seek improvements to drive efficiencies & reporting.
  • Resource planning and procurement of external contract resources.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience




The successful candidate will have at least 7 years’ experience and have:


  • Experience in engagement and management of professional service consultants.
  • Experience in negotiating large contracts using FIDIC/NEC or other comparable formats.
  • Experience in agreeing large commercial solutions to residual technical risk in contracts.
  • Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and influencing others.
  • Experience working on major construction projects & understanding of contracts associated with these projects.
  • Flexibility to adjust and thrive in an environment with changing requirements, schedules and priorities for multiple projects or assignments.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely express information (or data) to non-technical associates, peers and management.
  • Understanding and challenging the balance between value and risk.




  • Understanding of the Single Electricity Market (SEM) in Ireland and GB energy markets.
  • Understanding of EU Procurement Regulations.





  • A relevant 3rd level qualification and equivalent work experience is essential.

The successful candidate may combine remote / smart working within the jurisdiction, with attendance at base (Engineering & Major Projects, One Dublin Airport Central) for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and subject to ongoing review.
