Control Room Operators
Position Description
As ESB Networks transition the electricity system to a high renewable, low carbon system, with customers at the centre, there is a need to maintain operational excellence and ensure security of supply, whilst developing and scaling more flexible demand. ESB Networks have recently realigned the organisation structure to focus on Distribution Markets and System Operation (DMSO) capabilities required to meet the recent Energy Demand Strategy (CRU 21/06/2023) and accelerated Climate Action Plan targets.
As part of the new DMSO structure, the ESB Networks National Distribution Control Centre (NDCC) team is expanding to meet the needs of the future. The NDCC comprises of the Control Room and Dispatch teams. The NDCC operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure that centralised operational services are delivered to the required standards. The NDCC is responsible for monitoring the electricity distribution network, responding to alarms and faults, carrying out remote operations, implementing centralised control, and dispatching field staff when required.
The Control Room Operator is responsible for monitoring the electricity distribution network, responding to alarms and faults, carrying out remote operations, and implementing centralised control.
The role is based fulltime in a Control Room, in the NDCC, in a secure location in Dublin and involves shift working including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitoring the High Voltage and Medium Voltage electricity distribution networks via a SCADA system
- Responding to SCADA system alarms as required
- Remote operations using SCADA and automation equipment installed on the electricity network.
- Fulfilling the role of System Controller for the High Voltage and Medium Voltage electricity distribution networks
- Maintaining the operational state of the High Voltage and Medium Voltage distribution electricity network model
- Responding to electricity network faults and directing/supporting local on-site response
- Facilitating planned work and operations by carrying out remote operations and providing consent for pre-arranged local operations and activities
- Preparation, checking and approval of High Voltage operational switching plans to cater for planned and fault outages on the electricity network.
- Implementing standing operational policy, procedures, and instructions
- Liaising with the Transmission System Operator via Eirgrids National Control Centre as required
- Use of the Operations Management System to monitor and record system operations, outages, and faults.
- Other duties as required to facilitate the effective management and operation of the National Distribution Control Centre
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Knowledge or experience of electricity distribution network operations (e.g. 110kV, 38kV, 20kV and 10kV system operations)
- Knowledge of or experience working with electricity distribution network assets
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong IT skills and technical capability
- A willingness to embrace change and work with new systems and technologies as they emerge.
- A willingness to work shift hours, potentially covering evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- A willingness to work additional hours if required outside normal scheduled rota.
Desirable
- Knowledge of Electrical Safety Rules and network operations policies and procedures
- Knowledge of Operations Technology/Systems i.e., SCADA System and Operations Management System (OMS/NMS)
- Knowledge of telecoms systems relating to electricity network distribution
Qualifications

Advanced Level 6 Electrical Craft Certificate/A suitable Level 7 or higher qualification in Electrical, Electrical Services, Electronics, Mechanical or other suitable alternative qualification with a sizeable electrical theory content

Appropriate training will be provided to the successful candidate.
Shift work shall apply for which the appropriate rate will be paid.

Salary
€57,000 to €67,000 per annum + Shift allowance.
