Position Description

 

The successful candidate will be an experienced Electrical Engineer who will be responsible for the technical and commercial aspects of onshore grid connections for large off-shore wind farms. They will coordinate the expertise to deliver HV sub-stations for these projects and project manage external contracts.

 

They will work as part of a multidisciplinary team on the ongoing development of a number of offshore wind projects around the coast of Ireland and the UK, with the opportunity to join a specific offshore wind project team when projects reach this stage in their development.

 

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, innovative, commercially driven and have a track record of successfully delivering projects of a comparable nature and scale.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Key responsibilities will include the items below:

 

  • Act as electrical lead for all onshore electrical works (substations, grid connections etc.) and coordinate interfaces with the renewable generation plant, civil works, TSO/DSO etc. 
  • Responsible for the optimization of the design and supporting the construction stage to ensure that the wind farms have the maximum reliability, quality and safety
  • Coordinate the overall system design (system studies, protection, SCADA, grid code compliance, FEED’s etc.) with the relevant technical experts
  • Input into the LCOE model
  • Identify the most commercially appropriate contracting strategy to deliver the project to industry standards, safely and within budget;   
  • Preparation of all the electrical specifications and technical documentation to develop tender packages and allow for project engagement and evaluation of supplier’s responses ensuring that the Permitting, Environmental and other local requirements are met
  • Evaluation of tender submission and contract negotiation ensuring that award to preferred tenders achieves best value for money. 
  • Administration of contract with appointed contractors including monitoring contractor progress, certifying progress payments, design reviews and material/plant inspection to ensure compliance with specification, quality audits etc.;  
  • Ensure that safety, health and environmental issues are prioritised at all stages of the project; 
  • Support the offshore electrical and onshore Operations and Maintenance teams
  • Act as the focal point for all Electrical integrity issues
  • Development of substation layouts and drawings for planning submissions; Coordination with OEMs, contractors, partners and other key stakeholders to develop competitive cost estimates for auction submissions; 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

 

The successful candidate must have:

 

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in large scale generation / energy sector with experience of working on electrical systems between MV and 400 kV . 
  • Strong contract management experience with an excellent understanding of Tendering, Tender evaluations, scoping, planning, design, costing, construction and commissioning assistance and oversight associated with substations and / or electrical works associated with large scale renewable generation projects. 
  • Working knowledge of and experience in the implementation of Engineering, Procurement & execution of EPC style contracts. 
  • A proven track record in delivering substations and / or electrical works associated with large scale generation projects. 
  • Experience of dealing with commercial aspects during project delivery. 
  • Experience in contract management with strong contract negotiation skills
  • The demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. 
  • Strong decision-making capability and judgement and solution driven
  • Strong interpersonal/communication and stakeholder management skills. 
  • Full drivers’ licence valid for use in Republic of Ireland. 

 

Desirable

 

  • Substation design experience
  • Experience of working on large-scale wind farm projects
  • PSDP and/or CDMC experience
  • Experience of working in a consortium or joint venture

 

 

Qualifications

 

Essential

 

  • Level 8 Engineering Degree or equivalant qualification

 

Desirable

 

  • Level 9 Engineering Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Chartered status in a recognised professional institution
  • Project Management qualification.

 

 

Location

 

This role is based in EMP Offices, OneDAC, Dublin or Eastgate, Cork but travel to project locations as required, is a key requirement of the role.

The successful candidate may combine working from home within the Republic of Ireland, with attendance at base for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and may change as we learn about hybrid working.  Site visits is also a feature of this role which will require a certain amount of travel within Ireland.
