Position Description
At ESB, data sits in the centre of our business, providing insights to support better business decisions. We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our growing data science team.
Working within ESB’s Data Science team, you will be part of a highly motivated and skilled team of data professionals working to achieve maximum value for our businesses and customers across all of our investments in systems and technologies.
The Data Science Team are responsible for delivering business insight through interpretation of large data sets from our financial, operational, network and customer systems. You will work closely with data engineers, data analysts and product owners to solve business challenges, prioritising, scoping and managing a broad range of data science projects.

Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities will cover the items below:
- Manage the delivery of data science solutions from inception, through Proof of Concept and into production, using a range of tools and methods.
- Work alongside other data scientists and analysts to design and implement models and experiments from end to end, including data ingestion and preparation, feature engineering, analysis and modeling, model deployment, performance tracking and documentation.
- Collaborating with engineering teams to continuously strengthen our machine learning pipelines.
- Make business recommendations based on the data that drives better business decisions.
- Collaborate with relevant business areas to identify new projects and opportunities, understand their requirements, agree success criteria and ensure delivery.
- Prioritise, scope and manage data science projects and the corresponding key performance indicators (KPIs) for success
- Stays abreast of internal and external developments to identify & implement best practice methodologies to deliver against current and future ESB analytics requirements
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- 2-4 years of relevant technical or business experience leveraging data intelligence to deliver products and services that drive customer value and new revenue.
- 1-2 years’ experience using Data Science algorithms and methods to solve business problems using R or Python
- Excellent capability in SQL to extract data from databases
- Ability to communicate proposed solutions, requirements and design effectively to our customers and partners.
- Experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches.
- Strong passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data.
- A masters or third level qualification in Computer Science / Statistics / Maths or Data Analytics or equivalent work experience is essential
Desirable
- Some working experience in Modelling tools (SPSS, SAS).
- Having domain knowledge in Customer or Engineering fields.
- An external focus and ability to seek ways that ESB can continue to adapt and improve its Data Science practice.
- Agile development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)
- Proficiency with Azure DevOps
Location
This position will be based in is ESB Head Office, Dublin
ESB is committed to smart working – combining digital tools with a culture of trust and empowerment to enable flexible ways of working. The successful candidate may work flexibly within their jurisdiction with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration on at least one anchor day per week. All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.
Reporting To
The successful candidate will report to the Data Science & Visualisation Manager, CIO.

Salary
€48,000 - €56,500 depending on experience.
