Electrical Engineer
We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Professional Electrical Engineer to join the Project & Design Group within Generation Engineering Delivery. The successful candidate will support ESB in the delivery of new generation projects, including the development of zero and low carbon generating assets, the support of existing assets within ESB’s plant portfolio, and the provision of consultancy services to international clients.
The Generation Engineering Delivery department within ESB Engineering and Major Projects leads engineering support for ESB’s generation business. The department manages the engineering aspects of new generation developments and provides asset management services to the existing ESB Generation fleet.
In support of ESB’s strategic objectives of decarbonising electricity, building resilient infrastructure and empowering clients, the Senior Professional Electrical Engineer will contribute to the development and delivery of zero and low carbon generation projects, provide engineering support to maintain and enhance the performance of ESB’s existing generation assets, and support the delivery of engineering consultancy services to clients.
The role combines project delivery, owner's engineering, technical assurance and asset support activities across ESB's generation portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide electrical engineering expertise in the specification, design, integration, testing and commissioning of electrical systems including generators, transformers, HV/MV switchgear, protection and control systems, auxiliary power systems and grid connection infrastructure.
- Manage electrical projects end-to-end, from scoping and design through procurement, installation, commissioning and handover.
- Prepare technical specifications, evaluate tenders, and ensure compliance with Irish, international and ESB standards for quality, safety and reliability.
- Oversee quality, health, safety and environmental requirements during construction and commissioning, including reviewing risk assessments and method statements.
- Coordinate engineering inputs across multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective integration of electrical systems with overall project requirements.
- Support team operations through task coordination, stakeholder engagement, project budget management, mentoring junior engineers and contributing to project governance and reporting activities.
- Support the specification, review and coordination of electrical studies, including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, protection coordination and Grid Code compliance assessments.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Primary Degree in Electrical Engineering (Level 8 NFQ or above) or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Minimum five years’ experience in the electricity sector or similar industry with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Conventional thermal power generation
- Renewable power generation
- Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
- HV/MV distribution systems
- Grid connections and compliance
- Industrial process plant
- Demonstrated experience in the specification, design, commissioning, operation or maintenance of electrical power systems within power generation, transmission, distribution or large industrial facilities.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively and share knowledge within a team.
- Demonstrated project engineering, management skills, effective decision-making and sound judgment capabilities.
- Excellent time management, prioritisation, and computer skills, including MS Office proficiency.
- Thorough understanding of Health, Safety, and Environment standards, with strong communication and report writing abilities and a full clean driving license.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer status or demonstrable progress towards achieving Chartered Engineer status.
- PSDP or PSCS Training / Competency
- Knowledge of ETAP or similar Power System Studies software

The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

Salary
€59,000 - €70,000 Per Annum
