Position Description    

 

ESB is a purpose led company striving to create a brighter future for the customers and communities we serve, leading the transition to reliable, affordable, low-carbon energy.  Network Projects is the group within ESB Engineering and Major Projects (EMP) whose contribution is to efficiently deliver ESB Networks (ESBN) major capital infrastructure projects and engineering solutions required to meet these goals.    

  

The Electrical Safety Specialist will work in conjunction with the EMP Safety team and Network Projects delivery teams to ensure that the business is fully compliant with legislation and ESB/ESB Network requirements and that Contractors are operating to the highest standards on site to ensure the safe delivery of ESB Networks major capital program on Substation, Cable & OHL projects.

Key Responsibilities 

 

  • Ensure Safety Compliance Across Projects - Implement ESB Networks safety requirements and ISO 45001 standards, providing senior guidance and coaching to teams on ESBN procedures, Electrical Safety Rules, DWA processes, and safe operational practices  

  • Lead Contractor Safety Assurance - Oversee and challenge contractor safety performance through audits, documentation reviews, and participation in procurement processes, ensuring alignment with EMP and ESBN expectations.  

  • Drive Safety Leadership & Culture - Champion a proactive, learning focused safety culture by providing visible leadership, consistent messaging, and promoting ESB Safety Leadership behaviours across project teams and contractors  

  • Manage Incident Response & Investigations - Lead investigations into incidents and near misses, identify root causes, drive corrective actions, and ensure effective organisational learning and strengthened electrical safety resilience.  

  • Deliver Training & Build Competence - Design and deliver targeted safety training, workshops, and learning forums; mentor staff on ESBN procedures, Electrical Safety Rules, DWA, and operational interfaces; and manage keyholder authorisation processes  

  • Provide Expert Technical Advice - Offer highlevel technical support on safe systems of work, outage coordination, commissioning, and ESBN safety procedures, enabling sound, timely, and safe decisionmaking on complex electrical issues  

  • Report on Performance & Drive Continuous Improvement - Analyse safety data, identify trends, report insights to SHE and project leads, and lead improvement initiatives that enhance compliance, performance, and organisational learning 

 

 

 

Experience and Qualifications 

 

Essential  

  • Third level qualification in Occupational Health & Safety or a closely related field  

  • 7+ years’ experience in electrical utility safety, including operations, stations, overhead lines, cables, and commissioning, with strong expertise in electrical safe systems of work  

  • Strong Legislative & Technical Knowledge of health and safety legislation, codes of practice, ESBN electrical safety rules, industry standards, and ESBN operational/technical procedures  

  • Strong communication Skills with the ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally, with proven experience in training, mentoring, influencing, and presenting to diverse audiences  

  • Collaborative and strong interpersonal skills at building relationships and working effectively across all organisational levels to support safe working practices  

  • Proven capability to lead safety initiatives, influence positive safety outcomes, and support behavioural change while modelling ESB Safety Leadership behaviours  

  • Strong ability to work autonomously, make informed decisions, manage competing priorities, and drive continuous safety improvements with professionalism and ownership   

 

Desirable  

  • Qualified electrical engineer/technician with hands on experience delivering largescale transmission and distribution projects  

  • Skilled in safety auditing and ISO 45001 implementation, supported by environmental training and onsite project experience  

  • Strong collaborator who advises, trains, and supports project teams to ensure safety, compliance, and high-quality delivery across all project phases  

 

Location  

 

This position will be based in The Sidings Grand Canal Dock Dublin 2, or Eastgate, Little Island Cork or ESB. This is a nationwide role that will require some travel.  

 

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.  

 

 

 

Reporting To 

 

The role will report to the Safety Health & Environment Manager, Network Projects EMP, P&S.

Salary 

 

€71,900 - €84,600 per annum, depending on experience.
