Engineer (Substation & DC Systems)

Vacancy Number:  26808
Category:  Engineering - Electrical
Job Type:  Full-time

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer (Substations & DC Systems) with a minimum of two years’ post-qualification experience in electrical, substation, or transmission/distribution engineering. This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer seeking to deepen their expertise in high-voltage mobile substation bays and DC battery systems, while contributing to a team focused on national infrastructure resilience and energy transition.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical capability in substation or DC systems, the ability to collaborate across disciplines, and a proactive approach to professional development. Familiarity with ATEX compliance and a willingness to specialise further in this area are important.

In support of ESB’s strategic objectives of decarbonising electricity, building resilient infrastructure and empowering customers, you will enable critical grid continuity through the delivery and maintenance of mobile substation bays; support the safe deployment of compliant DC battery systems; and ensure asset resilience by contributing to standards, repair strategies and lifecycle decision-making in line with ESB’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical and project management support for the installation and maintenance of 110 kV and 220 kV mobile substation bays.
  • Manage commissioning and compliance assurance of DC battery systems, including ATEX safety assessments.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders on risk-based asset condition evaluations and decision-making.
  • Support repair, upgrade and overhaul projects across the mobile bay and DC systems portfolio.
  • Contribute to the review and development of internal engineering standards and policies.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and design standards.
  • Participate in knowledge sharing, mentoring, and continuous improvement initiatives within the team.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 8 qualification in Electrical, Power Systems, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in substation, transmission, or DC systems engineering.
  • Knowledge of high-voltage plant, DC battery infrastructure, and ATEX or safety compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing technical documentation.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, solve problems, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong safety awareness and working knowledge of H&S, environmental, and design regulations.
  • Full clean driving licence.

Desirable

  • Experience with primary/secondary asset condition testing or performance analysis.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., Engineers Ireland, IET, CIGRE).

Location

This is primarily a site-based role. This position’s reporting base will be at One Dublin Airport Central, Dublin, Eastgate, Little Island, Cork, or Portlaoise.
