Environmental Specialist
The Generation Engineering department in ESB Engineering and Major Projects (EMP) is the centre of engineering for ESB’s generation businesses and provides consultancy services in generation technology for external and international clients.
We currently have an opportunity for an Environmental Specialist to join our Generation Engineering team. The successful candidate will support Engineering and Major Projects in the delivery of power plant projects (Thermal, Hydros, Distributed Generation & Renewables) within both new build and existing projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Provision of specialist support and leadership in achieving ESB’s climate ambitions for new and existing developments during design, construction and operation, supporting Industrial Emissions (IE) licence applications, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) permit applications, abstraction licences and the development of Environment Management Systems (EMS) for Generation projects and maintaining ISO14001 certification.
- Liaise with stakeholders to achieve business objectives including IEL/GHG permit applications, abstraction applications and other projects as required and delivering environmental expertise on ESB low/zero carbon projects.
- Maintain awareness of environmental legislation, including regulator environmental guidance documents, both current and forthcoming, and reviewing impacts to the GT business.
- Provide technical guidance to generation sites on interpretations of environmental legislation, policies, internal and external standards and guidelines and legislative frameworks (e.g., EPA, HSE, DoE, Councils).
- Complete environmental audits/inspections (for IEL, GHG, EMSs) on GT sites as required and manage continuous improvement programmes in relation to IEL, EMS and CSRD/Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).
- Support CO2 emissions reporting and verification processes to ensure compliance with GHG permits and EU ETS reporting requirements.
- Support Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) implementation and reporting.
- Lead sustainability initiatives in areas such as biodiversity, waste management and energy/water efficiency.
- Manage procurement processes for environmental projects/contracts.
- Manage consultants and contractors where required, review technical reports, and progress solutions to technical issues that arise.
- Investigate and develop reporting dashboards/systems for monitoring/trending key performance indicators in the areas of Environment & Sustainability.
- Other duties which may from time to time be assigned by the Generation Environment and Test Team, Generation Engineering.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- A primary degree in environmental science/ environmental engineering, science or equivalent
- Minimum experience of 7 years in industry such as energy or pharmaceutical with particular emphasis on a role in environmental management on regulated sites.
- Experience with Environmental Management Systems, Industrial Emission Licences and Green House Gas Permits.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of EU/Irish/UK Environmental legislation requirements
- Strong knowledge and understanding of environmental regulators environmental guidance relevant to Industrial Emissions licenses and GHG permits.
- Full driving licence with eligibility to drive in Ireland and access to a car.
Desirable
- Experience in the following areas is of particular relevance.
- Experience with Environmental Management Systems, Industrial Emission Licences and Green House Gas Permits.
- Sustainability Reporting (ESG/CSRD)
- Understanding of environment regulatory requirements and industry best practise within Ireland and EU.
- Strong interest in Sustainability and Climate Change.
- Strong stakeholder management skills
- Self-motivation and ability to project-manage own work.
- Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure.
- Strong report writing capability.
Location
This position will be based in EMP offices in Dublin or Cork
Travel to and from other EMP office locations and generation stations sites will feature as part of this role.
