Occupational Health Nurse
Position description
The Occupational Health department is an integral part of our Health and Wellbeing Service which forms part of a centralised Health, Safety and Environment (SHE) Function. The primary objective of the ESB Health and Wellbeing service is to support our staff in their own effective management of their health and wellbeing to enable them to be productive, motivated, and engaged in both their working and personal lives.
ESB operates a dedicated Occupational Health department for the company which supports the organisation in the provision of advice and support both to management and to staff through proactive and remedial health support. Services include Absence Management Support, Pre-employment Screening, Health Assessments and Health surveillance programmes as well as a range of other general health promotion activities.
The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) providing the service will need to be competent, motivated, professionally decisive, and confident with excellent communication and team working skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Absence Management - proactively manage short- and long-term absenteeism and lost time injuries, using clinical decision-making to support case resolution
- Pre-Employment Screening - ensure medical fitness of potential employees through examinations and desk-based assessments
- Case Management Support - provide guidance to line managers and HR on individual health cases and facilitate case management meetings
- Health Surveillance Programmes - implement and deliver monitoring programmes such as audiometry, lead exposure, and Hepatitis B
- Vaccination & Health Promotion - coordinate and support vaccination drives and other health promotion initiatives
- Service Development & Education - promote the Occupational Health service, contribute to departmental projects, and stay current with best practices
- Confidentiality & Compliance - maintain GDPR compliance and uphold medical confidentiality standards
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Registered General Nurse with a Higher Diploma or Master’s in Occupational Health, Safety & Hygiene (or equivalent)
- Current NMBI registration
- 3+ years’ experience in Occupational Health Nursing, including case management, audiometry, and health surveillance
- Strong interpersonal & collaborative skills as an effective communicator across all levels, with proven ability to influence and work cross-functionally
- Skilled in problem-solving and clinical judgment, with clear escalation protocols
- Proficient in IT systems and computer literacy
Desirable
- Commitment to continuous improvement to actively support change initiatives and process enhancements within the organisation
- Certified clinical skills for certifications in Industrial Audiometry, Spirometry, Phlebotomy, Manual Handling, Occupational First Aid, and Chain of Custody
Location
The role is based in the Mews, 40 Stephens Place, Dublin 2 D02 C825.

The successful candidate may work flexibly within their jurisdiction with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration on at least two anchor days per week. All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.
Reporting To
This role reports to the Occupational Health Manager.

Salary
€48,100 - €56,600 per annum (depending on experience)
