Off Shore Wind Senior Foundations Specialist

The Generation Engineering Offshore Wind (OSW) Group, within Engineering and Major Projects (EMP), is seeking an experienced Senior Offshore Wind Foundations Specialist Engineer to provide technical leadership across ESB’s offshore wind portfolio. The role will lead and assure foundation design, package management, certification and, where applicable, fabrication management of large offshore structures from early development through procurement, construction and operations. The successful candidate will combine deep foundation design expertise with practical package and fabrication delivery experience, strong commercial judgement and the ability to influence multidisciplinary project teams, senior stakeholders, consultants, fabricators and contractors. 

In support of ESB’s strategic objectives of decarbonising electricity and building resilient infrastructure, you will help deliver safe, technically robust and commercially optimised foundation solutions for major offshore wind projects. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Act as ESB’s senior technical authority for offshore wind foundations, setting technical direction and assuring that foundation designs, package deliverables and fabrication outputs for large offshore structures are safe, robust, certifiable, commercially acceptable and aligned with project requirements. 

  • Lead foundation concept selection, design strategy and critical technical reviews across fixed-bottom solutions, including monopiles and jackets, ensuring design decisions account for fabrication methodology, constructability, supply-chain capability, transport and installation, and provide informed input on emerging floating foundation technologies. 

  • Lead the definition, procurement and management of high-value foundation design, package and fabrication contracts for large offshore structures, including scope development, tender evaluation, technical negotiations, contract award, design-to-fabrication interfaces and consultant, fabricator or contractor performance. 

  • Lead design certification and independent verification activities, coordinating with certification bodies and project stakeholders to manage design risk and protect asset value. 

  • Own and communicate foundation-related design, package, fabrication, programme, cost, quality, safety and interface risks, ensuring implications for consenting, manufacturability, supply chain, transport and installation, operations and commercial strategy are understood and managed. 

  • Provide authoritative DevEx, CapEx and OpEx assumptions, cost estimates and optimisation advice for foundation packages across the project lifecycle. 

  • Develop organisational capability by mentoring engineers, sharing lessons learned, maintaining market awareness and representing ESB with key industry and supply-chain stakeholders. 

 

Experience and Qualifications 

Essential 

  • Level 8 degree in Civil, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering, or an equivalent engineering qualification. 

  • Typically 10 years or more relevant professional experience, including substantial experience in offshore foundation design and design management together with foundation package management and/or fabrication management of large offshore structures, and experience operating in a senior or lead capacity. 

  • Extensive knowledge of fixed offshore foundation systems, including monopiles and jackets, and the relevant design codes, standards and certification requirements. 

  • Demonstrated experience leading complex foundation design and delivery contracts, with the ability to carry engineering requirements through procurement and fabrication, including management of programme, cost, quality, technical risk, design change, non-conformances and consultant, fabricator or contractor performance. 

  • Strong working knowledge of integrated loads, primary and secondary steel, fatigue, corrosion protection, materials, welding, finite-element analysis and environmental loading, together with practical understanding of fabrication engineering, quality control, constructability and transport and installation interfaces. 

  • Proven ability to assess and communicate complex technical and commercial risks and to influence decisions across multidisciplinary teams and senior stakeholders. 

  • Strong commercial awareness, delivery focus and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to work independently and lead through ambiguity. 

 

Desirable 

  • Level 9 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline. 

  • Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional institution. 

  • Experience of floating offshore foundations, moorings or anchors, offshore structural inspection, fabrication or installation. 

  • Project management qualification or equivalent delivery experience. 

 

This position will be based at an ESB Engineering & Major Projects office in Dublin or Cork, with travel to project, supplier and fabrication locations as required. 

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

Salary 

€86,000 - €101,000 per annum
