Position Description
As a Regulatory and Commercial Manager within the Regulation & Compliance team, you will play a pivotal role acting as the in-house expert on industry codes and their interpretation, providing critical support to our commercial business. Your expertise will be applied across the various jurisdictions where we are actively investing, including the Single Electricity Market covering Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as the GB power market.
This advice will have a direct impact on trading activities, participation in capacity markets, integration of interconnectors, and future investment opportunities. It is essential to have worked as an internal specialist within a complex organisational setting.
You will be entrusted with leading specific projects that are driven by regulatory changes, and will work in collaboration with various departments, including Asset Development, Asset Management, Strategy, and Trading teams.
As part of your professional development, you will have the opportunity to work alongside other managers who focus on gas markets, governance and compliance, as well as grid code and connection management. This role operates in a fast-paced and evolving environment, made more dynamic and exciting by the significant changes associated with society’s transition to a low-carbon future.
Key Responsibilities
Expert Analysis and Commercial Assessment
Provide in-depth analysis of market regulations, evaluating their implications for the business and assessing the direct and indirect commercial impacts. This involves interpreting regulatory requirements to ensure that the organisation remains competitive and well positioned within the market landscape.
Regulatory Compliance
Ensure ongoing compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements to prevent the risk of penalties. Maintain high standards of diligence and oversight to safeguard the organisation’s reputation and operational integrity.
Identification of Business Risks and Opportunities
Interpret industry codes and policies to identify potential risks to the business, as well as opportunities for growth or improvement. This proactive approach ensures that the company can respond promptly to emerging challenges and capitalise on favourable developments within the regulatory environment.
Implementation of Rules and Relationship Building
Implement applicable rules with the objective of maximising economic returns for the business. In doing so, actively foster strong internal relationships by collaborating with relevant teams across the organisation to ensure alignment and effective execution of strategies.
Code Change Proposals
Propose and support new code changes that are aligned with the company’s strategic business objectives. Work collaboratively to develop and put forward recommendations that advance the organisation’s interests within the regulatory framework.
External Representation
Represent the company at meetings with regulators and industry groups, ensuring that the organisation’s positions and perspectives are effectively communicated and advocated in external forums.
Experience
The ideal candidate will possess more than ten years of hands-on experience in electricity market regulation. This extensive background includes a minimum of three years dedicated to market rule reform within a commercial setting, demonstrating robust expertise in traded markets and their real-world applications from a generator’s perspective. A deep understanding of relevant jurisdictional Balancing and Settlement codes, together with Capacity market codes, is essential, enabling effective participation in competitive wholesale markets. In addition, the candidate should be highly proficient in modelling and analytics, ensuring thorough analysis and interpretation of complex regulatory frameworks.
Commercial Awareness
The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of commercial awareness, possessing the ability to develop detailed insights into the operation of all ESB Generation and Trading (GT) assets across multiple energy markets. This involves a clear recognition of the different revenue streams and associated costs linked to each asset and market. The candidate will apply this expertise consistently across their responsibilities, ensuring a thorough evaluation of the costs and benefits attached to complex commercial challenges. Their decision-making will be informed and sound, delivering robust recommendations that support the business objectives.
It is essential that the individual is a self-starter, showing initiative and a proactive approach in all engagements and in meeting their objectives. Their ability to independently drive progress and deliver results is key to success in this role.

Proven problem-solving skills, combined with a proactive mindset, are required for this role. This analytical capability enables the individual to address challenges efficiently and deliver robust recommendations that align with organisational objectives.

Demonstrated experience in influencing others is critical. Qualifications
3rd level qualification (economics/engineering/technical/legal/commercial preferably) or equivalent, or equivalent work experience reflecting deep analysis and interpretation, scenario /risk management and effective team engagement is required.
Location
The new state of the art Fitzwilliam 27 office in Dublin is the location for this role allowing for collaboration and connecting with colleagues. In person meetings will be a feature of the role which may also involve overseas travel occasionally.
