Process Safety Specialist
Position Description

The Process Safety Specialist plays a critical role in enabling this mission, ensuring that our Generation & Trading (G&T) fleet operate safely and efficiently, and are maintained to the highest standard. The Process Safety Specialist plays a critical role in enabling ESB to deliver on its strategic priorities of decarbonising electricity, building resilient infrastructure, and empowering customers by ensuring that all assets are designed, operated, and maintained to the highest safety and reliability standards.
The Process Safety Specialist role involves leading process hazard analyses in a structured way, developing and reviewing safety documentation, advising on engineering controls, and supporting incident investigations. The specialist works closely with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to strengthen safety culture, prevent major accidents, and ensure regulatory compliance across all Generation & Trading (G&T) locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve process safety standards, procedures, and assurance processes across the G&T fleet.
- Advise engineering, operations, and project teams on safety by design principles, risk reduction measures, and compliance with internal and external safety requirements.
- Participate in or lead investigations into process related incidents and near misses, ensuring root causes are identified and robust corrective actions are implemented.
- Develop and track leading and lagging indicators, audit Process Safety Management elements, and report on performance to drive continuous improvement.
- Deliver training, coaching, and awareness sessions to build organisational capability in process safety and promote a proactive safety culture.
- Work closely with engineering, operations, maintenance, projects, and senior leadership to embed process safety into everyday decision making.
- Facilitate HAZOPs, HAZIDs, LOPAs and other structured risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure appropriate safeguards are in place.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Third Level engineering qualification or equivalent work experience in power generation.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role, including experience reporting & delivering information on Process Safety type KPI data.
- Structured problem-solving attitude, particularly in system and process issues.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary safety team.
- Internationally accepted safety qualification at professional level (eg. NEBOSH general certificate or equivalent).
- Proficiency with Microsoft SharePoint and structured document management.
- Full, clean driver's licence.
Desirable
- Proficiency with PowerPoint and Excel.
Location
This position will be based in ESB Head Office, 27 Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin 2. There will also be a requirement to travel to all generation locations when necessary or to central locations.
Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.
Reporting To
The successful Candidate will report to the Fire & Process Safety Specialist.

Salary
€59,900 - €70,500 per annum (depending on experience)
