Professional Engineer
The Electrical Onshore Renewable team manages the electrical scope of ESB’s Solar, Onshore Wind, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Generation projects. The team plays a crucial role in helping ESB achieve its Net Zero by 2040 strategy and is responsible for the electrical works throughout concept, development, construction, energisation, and handover phases. This includes delivering High Voltage Substations, Grid Connections, Collector Systems, and Renewable Technologies through Design and Build (D&B) and Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) contracts. The team provides Lead Electrical Engineering and handles Preliminary Designs, Specification Preparation, Tendering, Design reviews, Owner’s Engineering, Contract Management, and Site Supervision.
In support of ESB’s strategic objectives of decarbonising electricity, building resilient infrastructure, and empowering clients, the Electrical Project Engineer will deliver renewable energy projects, typically small to medium scale and connected at 38 kV or 110 kV.
The role includes leading and working with a skilled and motivated team, while coordinating with clients, contractors, OEMs, colleagues, and other stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
The Electrical Project Engineer’s key responsibilities include delivering high-level engineering, managing projects and contracts, and on-site supervision of contractors on renewable and energy storage projects. This role also involves establishing and maintaining high safety standards in all aspects of the work. Responsibilities include the following.

Feasibility & Design Development
Conduct project feasibility assessments including technical due diligence, concept designs, and budgetary pricing. Prepare and update technical specifications and designs for tender documentation.

Tender Management
Develop comprehensive tender enquiry documents, review and critically evaluate tender submissions to ensure alignment with project requirements.

Stakeholder Engagement & Project Delivery
Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to drive successful project outcomes, maintaining clear communication and alignment.

Health & Safety Oversight
Oversee health and safety aspects of projects, including preparation and review of relevant documentation to ensure regulatory and client standards are met.

Contractor & Quality Management
Manage contractors and review their design submissions for compliance with functional specifications and standards. Inspect plant and materials on-site and at manufacturing locations to verify quality and progress.

Leadership & Team Development
Act as Lead Electrical Engineer on renewable and energy storage projects, ensuring high-quality outputs. Shadow PSDP on similar sized projects to what is being developed.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
-
Level 8 Degree in Electrical Engineering plus 2 years post graduate experience
Or Level 7 in Electrical Engineering plus 5 years post graduate experience in applicable electrical engineering field or equivalent work experience

Experience in delivering electrical scope for HV substations or Renewable engineering projects and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities

An understanding of Tendering Process associated with Renewable projects.

Knowledge of construction and commissioning associated with substations or EBOP works associated with renewable and energy storage projects

Understanding of safety in construction, encompassing HV safety, PSDP and PSCS processes.

Strong stakeholder management skills and proven track record of managing internal and external stakeholders.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Full drivers’ licence valid for use in Republic of Ireland
Desirable

Experience in substation design, including proficiency with software tools such as EPLAN and AutoCAD

Experience of working on renewable energy projects

Knowledge of D&B and/or EPC projects

Project management and contract management skills and knowledge
Location
This position span teams and projects located across Ireland. The base location will be The Sidings, Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 2.
Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

€49,000 - €58,000 Per Annum
