Join our dedicated team in Networks Projects, we ensure the continuous pipeline of DSO driven projects is progressed from conceptual design stage through to planning permission and delivery. Networks Projects supports Network Assets in the development of project scope and costs based on Technical Approvals (TAs) or Committed Project Parameters (CPPs).    


Networks Project Development concentrate on developing the project scope to achieve Technical and Capital Approval. The Physical Design team primarily concentrate on confirming feasibility of design concepts, site selection for site acquisition and electrical physical design for planning permission. The work involves both greenfield and brownfield substation applications and involves working closely with the Centre of Engineering (CoE), ESB Networks Planners and Networks Assets. 


We have a permanent position for a Physical Design Specialist to join the Project Development Physical Team to deliver the project pipeline for PR6 and to help ESB progress the Net Zero 2040 targets.  



Key Responsibilities 


The Physical Design Specialist will provide leadership and technical guidance to Project Development team members in all aspects of the project conception including; development of physical substation layouts, sections, elevations and 3D substation design. The role will also involve design review, contract management, training, development, mentoring and interfacing with other design specialists and clients. 


The role will include the following work:  


  • Delivering for approval the Conceptual Physical Designs to agreed target timelines, including preparation of Feasibility Studies and Site Suitability Layouts for future pipeline projects.   
  • Develop Design Risk Assessments, Constructability Reviews and Project Risk Registers. 
  • Assist in the development of standardised design layouts and standard CAD cells. 
  • Manage the overall project deliverables for all stakeholders, coordinating inputs with the relevant stakeholders particularly at Pre TA stage of project development. 
  • Development of procedural documents to document processes, promoting efficiency within our work processes and ensuring a high-quality delivery of workload across the group. 
  • Commercial Management of design time and expenditure on projects, also ensuring our design focuses on efficiency and value engineering to maximise the overall project pipeline.  



Knowledge, Skills and Experience 



  • A minimum of seven years’ experience in substation design. 
  • A good understanding of all elements of substation electrical physical design principles. 
  • A strong work ethic with a clear focus on delivery to EMPs safety, time, quality and cost objectives. 
  • The demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. 
  • A proven track record of success contributing to the training and development of technical professionals and a flexible approach to work, especially where necessary to delivery excellent customer service. 



  • Experience with CAD packages such as Bentley Microstation. Auto CAD, Navisworks and Primtech.  
  • Full drivers' licence and relevant competencies to visit ESBN substations and sites on their own.     
  • Experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM). 






  • Third level qualification or appropriate experience  



  • PSDP Competency or CDMC equivalent. 
  • Site Working Competencies.  





Your base will be at one of our offices situated at One Dublin Airport Central or Eastgate Cork, but the role may require a certain amount of travel within Ireland.

The successful candidate may combine remote / smart working within the jurisdiction, with attendance at base for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and subject to ongoing review.
