Building Services/HVAC Design Engineer - Heat Pumps/Energy efficiency/Thermal projects
Position Description
The Smart Energy Services business in ESB’s Customer Solutions has been formed to develop and deliver an integrated energy management solution for large energy users in the UK and Ireland. We are working with prestigious clients in the retail, hospitality, education, pharma and agribusiness sectors. In particular, within this core business area, the Engineering Team is tasked with leading the development of engineering solutions to enable our Customers to reduce their carbon footprint and implement ESB Net Zero strategy.

Key Responsibilities
Working as a key member of the Mechanical team within the Engineering Team, delivering on engineering solutions in line with our Net Zero Strategy, the key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assess the feasibility of mechanical projects for heat pumps, chillers and other renewable generation or storage technologies, as well as providing options and solutions in line with SES Client’s requirements
- Lead the scoping of mechanical projects above, define requirements and customer needs, produce Bills of Quantity and indicative costing and assess and manage project and technical risks.
- Manage, from an engineering point of view, mechanical/HVAC projects from inception, specification, design reviews, procurement, validation, to post-installation design verification
- Perform thermal loads calculation and calculate proposed energy & CO2 savings for the proposed heat pump solutions versus existing fossil fuel systems
- Prepare mechanical plant specifications and functional specifications and evaluate tenders from scope, quality and technical perspective.
- Carry out design reviews of new build and retrofit mechanical plant to maximise safety and reliability and minimise life cycle cost and technical risk.
- Under the coordination of the Senior Mechanical Engineer, work closely and offer technical support to the Sales departments and the Delivery department in SES, whilst also promoting the Energy Management HUB Solutions
- Support other groups in the Engineering team with submetering of customer facilities and smart building initiatives
- Manage workload effectively and adhere to deadlines in an environment where priorities can be shifting
- Participate fully in the creative and entrepreneurial atmosphere of a growing company
- Keep informed of relevant technology advances in the area of expertise and promote their implementation where appropriate.
- Assist and support the Senior Mechanical Engineer in the planning and coordination of team tasks across work streams.
- Assist and support the Senior Mechanical Engineer in development and reviewing of work of junior engineers.
- Other duties that may be required from time to time by the company
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- 5+ years post qualification experience in a relevant field
- Proven track record of mechanical/building services system design capability
- Possess competence in design, commissioning or operation and maintenance of mechanical and/or building services systems utilising at least one of the following technologies: heat pumps, chillers, thermal energy storage, AHUs (Air Handling Units), CHP (Combined Heat and Power), gas turbines, boilers, plant rooms
- Well versed with Health, Safety and Environment Standards and procedures, including risk assessment skills
- Possess strong time management and prioritisation skills
- Highly skilled in creating technical documentation, report writing and communication to varied audiences
- Analytical, collaborative, team player
- Full clean driving license and flexibility to travel
- Excellent broad ranging IT skills
- Level 8 Building Services/Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent
Desirable
- Experience in risk management; the identification, assessment, mitigation, tracking, control and management of design and project risks.
- Excellent specific IT skills to include AutoCad, BIM (Building Information Modelling)
- Ability to manage own workload and multi task
- PSDP training and formal competency assessment
- Specific heat pumps and/or chillers detailed design experience

Master’s degree in relevant/associated field

Chartered Engineering status with a recognised engineering institution or demonstrable evidence of progress towards same is preferred.
Location
This position will be based in Swift Square, Santry

The successful candidate may work flexibly within their jurisdiction with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration on at least two anchor days per week. All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.

Salary
€57,800 - €68,100 per annum (depending on experience)
