Senior Electrical Specialist, Onshore Renewables
The Onshore Renewable Electrical team manages the electrical scope of ESB’s Solar, Onshore Wind, and Battery Energy Storage System Generation projects. The team plays a crucial role in helping ESB achieve its Net Zero by 2040 strategy and is responsible for the electrical works throughout the concept, development, construction, energisation, and handover phases. This includes delivering High Voltage Substations, Grid Connections, Collector Systems, and Renewable Technologies through Design and Build (D&B) and Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) contracts. The team provides Lead Electrical Engineering and handles Preliminary Designs, Specification Preparation, Tendering, Design reviews, Owner’s Engineering, Contract Management, and Site Supervision.
In support of ESB’s strategic objectives of decarbonising electricity, building resilient infrastructure, and empowering clients, the Senior Specialist will act as the Lead Electrical Engineer for renewable energy projects and provide technical leadership within the group. The role involves leading and collaborating with a highly skilled team, while working closely with clients, contractors, OEMs, colleagues, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of projects.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the development and delivery of large, complex renewable energy and electrical infrastructure projects, acting as Engineering Delivery Lead and providing technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle.
• Manage project development activities, including feasibility studies, due diligence assessments, conceptual design development, budgetary pricing, technical specifications, scopes of work and tender documentation.
• Lead procurement and contract management activities, including tender evaluations, tender negotiations, contract strategy development, contract award and administration of D&B and EPC contracts.
• Manage engineering design assurance and project delivery, including contractor management, design reviews, design verification and approval, ensuring compliance with project requirements, standards and governance processes.
• Oversee construction, manufacturing and commissioning activities, including inspections, factory acceptance testing, site quality assurance and
verification of compliance with safety, technical and commercial requirements.
• Undertake PSDP, safety and quality leadership responsibilities, promoting best practice in design safety management and fostering a strong safety and quality culture across all project activities.
• Provide subject matter expertise and organisational leadership, supporting continuous improvement, mentoring and developing engineers, building PSDP capability and contributing to the delivery of the organisation's strategic objectives.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
• Minimum of seven years' post-graduate experience in the HV power industry and/or Electrical Balance of Plant (EBOP) works associated with renewable energy and energy storage projects.
• High level of technical expertise in renewable generation, BESS, substations and associated electrical infrastructure, with a proven track record delivering significant engineering projects.
• Strong knowledge of engineering design, design verification and approval, PSDP/CMDC requirements, Designing for Safety principles, and applicable engineering standards and industry best practice.
• Proven experience leading engineering delivery, including feasibility studies, technical due diligence, design development, tender preparation, procurement and contractor management for major projects.
• Strong commercial and contractual capability, including tender evaluation, contract administration, contractor management and working knowledge of D&B, EPC and FIDIC contract arrangements.
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication, presentation and report-writing skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong leadership, critical thinking and decision-making skills, with a demonstrated commitment to mentoring and developing colleagues, promoting safety and quality, and driving continuous improvement.
Desirable
• Full, valid driving license that is recognised for use in Ireland
• Competence assessed as PSDP/PD through the PSDP/PD assessment process.
• Experience acting as Engineering Delivery Lead and/or Electrical Contracts Manager on major renewable or BESS projects.
• Interview, selection, and assessment experience.
• Negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
• Experience supporting organisational capability development and technical leadership initiatives.
• Experience acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within a specialist electrical engineering discipline.
Location
This position will be based in EMP offices located at the Sidings, Dublin
Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

Salary
€71,000 - €84,000 Per annum
