Senior Engineer, Substations Engineering

We are expanding our resourcing and providing opportunities to join our Substations Engineering team as we continue our shared journey to a Brighter Future.
Substations Engineering is a key role in ensuring the correct technical direction of our HV Substation capital works projects from MV up to 400 KV. The role has responsibility for supporting development of key substation engineering documentation and content, ensuring our designs are fit for purpose for the successful delivery of our 2040 Net Zero strategy. This role will support all substation capital projects, providing specialist engineering services and support to the wider substation delivery functions in ESB.
A focal point of the Substations Design Services Team is the proactive identification and development of standardised design deliverables to increase effectiveness in project delivery. Achieving this objective will leverage individual experience to best support ESB’s programmes of work and develop skillsets to respond to the dynamic and evolving challenges in substation delivery.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibility of the role is to provide support & contribution to the development of high-quality designs and safety coordination on a diverse range of electricity transmission and distribution development projects, including:
- Preparing substation designs, high voltage materials management & design review, facilitating enhanced design coordination, attending meetings, and ensuring design deliverables meet all the necessary quality requirements
- Review, development and refinement of Work Instructions and Standard Design Processes
- Implementation of design reviews on substation capital projects ensuring lessons learnt are captured and appropriately actioned
- Support the rollout of pilot projects for new technologies and engage/contribute to relevant industry Forums and Professional Bodies
- A strong understanding of Risk Assessment in conceptual and project design
- A strong work ethic with a clear focus on delivering results within a tight time frame whilst ensuring the safety and quality of the work is not impacted
- A proven track record of success contributing to the training and development of other staff members within the group
- The ability to manage and coordinate inputs from a range of engineering disciplines and key stakeholders
- A flexible approach to work, especially where necessary to deliver excellent customer service
- Proven ability to work on own initiative and deliver results to strict deadlines
- Excellent communication skills
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
The successful candidate will, ideally, have several of the qualities listed below:
- A proven track record in substation engineering delivery, including detail high voltage substation design material
- Experience in a wide range of the design including transmission and distribution substations, for example, 10/20 kV, 38 kV, 110 kV, 220 kV and 400 kV substation design
- Awareness of Substation systems, architectures, operations, and design constraints
- Experience of adaptive design & development of substation design solutions
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Full EU driving licence
Desirable
It is desirable that the candidate has achieved the following:
- PSDP Competency (or CDMC equivalent).
- Site work competency
- Experience of ePlan/Microstation/CAD software for Substation Design Development
- Experience in development of standardised design deliverables
Qualifications
Essential
Either level 8 in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience is essential
Location
This role(s) is expected to be based in ESB E&MP Dublin offices or Eastgate Cork, with potential for remote working, but travel to project locations as required, is a key requirement of the role.

Salary
€59,000 - €70,000 per annum
