Position Description

ESB Networks provides the infrastructure that transports electricity to all customers in Ireland through both the distribution and the transmission Systems. ESB Networks works to meet the needs of all Irish electricity customers, providing universal affordable access to the electricity system and delivering and managing the performance of a system of almost 160,000 km of overhead networks, 28,000 km of underground cables, over 800 high voltage substations, significant amounts of connected generation (including renewable generation connected to the distribution and transmission systems) and 2.5 million customers.

To ensure that our day-to-day activities are managed sustainably, the ESB Networks' Sustainability and Environmental team, and senior leadership provide support to various groups and teams across the business with environmental responsibilities. The Sustainability and Environmental team also interacts with external regulatory agencies such as the EPA, CRU and Local Authorities.

 

The Senior Manager for Sustainability and Environment is responsible for the overall Environment & Sustainability strategic direction and performance of the organisation. The Senior Manager provides leadership in developing, adapting, and driving implementation of business strategy to achieve key business objectives in this area of responsability.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Sustainability and Environmental Strategy and Policy of ESB Networks in conjunction with the SMT, and consistent with ESB Group Sustainability and Environmental Policies
  • Oversee the realisation of ESB Networks Net Zero by 2040 strategy and its Carbon Footprint trajectory across scopes 1, 2 & 3.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in Sustainability and Environmental performance in ESB Networks and lead the business in implementing these improvements
  • Lead the continued expansion from beyond compliance to net positive contributor on all environmental and sustainability matters across ESB Networks
  • Grow and expand ESB Networks Circular Economy activities
  • Oversee and implement the ESB Networks Biodiversity Strategy
  • Provide support to line managers and staff in managing Sustainability and Environmental risks specific to ESB Networks
  • Provide assurance on managing Sustainability and Environmental risks specific to ESB Networks and compliance with environmental legislation
  • Advance specific projects and Sustainability and Environmental initiatives
  • Update Networks SMT on Sustainability and Environmental performance
  • Oversee and authorise appropriate and consistent Sustainability and Environmental communications
  • Ensure all legislative and other compliance requirements are met
  • Manage sustainability and environmental risk for Networks S&E Team
  • Responsible for ensuring the promotion of the Sustainability and Environmental Function as an informed and expert service provider.

 

Experience & Qualifications

  • A proven track record of substantial, relevant experience at middle management level, and/or a relevant post graduate qualification
  • Has a deep understanding of the organisation strategy, performance goals and drivers
  • Excellent influencing, leadership, stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Ability to work on one's own initiative and to challenge and influence the thinking of others are essential requirements
  • Strong strategic and inclusive leadership and team collaboration skills. 
  • Proven ability to lead transformation and manage complex and technical programmes to achieve strategic goals. 
  • Systems thinking enhanced by future technology, actionable policies and plans
  • Capacity to operate effectively at Senior Leadership Team level, exhibiting drive, agility and resilience  
  • Learning-oriented with strong interpersonal, engagement, and the personal credibility to deliver the highest standards of people performance across ESB Group. 

 

Location

This position is based in Dublin.  

 

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.
