The Transmission and Distribution Engineering (TDE) business, Engineering and Major Projects, is the centre of engineering for ESB’s Transmission & Distribution businesses, as well as providing consultancy services in T&D technology for external clients. The Power System Studies Team in Network System Services (NSS) Group is a key part of the TDE business with a dedicated group of engineers and consultants providing specialised power system modelling and analysis services to clients in Ireland and overseas, typically involving computer modelling and simulation of different aspects of electrical power systems.
The main services provided by PSS Team include:
- Development of practical solutions for clients based on power system analysis (power flow, short-circuit, transient stability, electromagnetic transients, power quality studies, etc.).
- Protection relay setting services for utility and industrial clients worldwide.
- Substation earth grid design and testing services for a range of utility and industrial clients.
The role of the senior power system studies engineer is to project-manage and carry out a range of technical power system studies, including but not limited to the connection of various generation, synchronous and non-synchronous, to the system. Knowledge of low carbon technologies and their impact on the power system is desirable. Assistance with the training and development of junior staff is part of this role.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Project-managing, carrying out and documenting technical studies such as power flow, short-circuit, transient stability studies, protection relay settings and other technical studies.
- Understanding the technical, commercial, and financial nature of the power system studies projects and being able to direct and manage coordination of same with internal and external stakeholders.
- Meeting requirements for project safety, quality, programme and budget, and monitoring projects from the initial contact through to final delivery.
- Participating in the scoping / bidding process for potential power system studies projects.
- Assisting with training and development of junior staff within NSS Group, and with the development and documentation of internal and external training courses and quality procedures.
- Providing specialist technical support and training services, where required, to other EMP and ESB stakeholders
- Flexibility is important in all aspects of the role, including travel nationally and internationally
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
The successful candidate will ideally have several of the qualities listed below:
- A minimum of five years’ experience in the area of Power System Studies, preferably including at least two years of experience at an advanced level (checking/verifying work of junior staff, training staff and developing work processes, tools and templates).
- Experience in some of the following specialised power system studies software packages: PSS/E, PSS SINCAL, PowerFactory, CAPE, CDEGS
- Strong technical capability.
- Excellent communication and report writing skills.
- Proven track record of delivery of projects on time and to the highest technical standards.
- Self-motivated with ability to project manage and prioritize own work.
- Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure.
- Proven track record of success contributing to the training and development of technical professionals.
- Ability to make quality decisions and judgments, with a logical, yet imaginative approach to problem solving.
Desirable
It is desirable that the candidate has achieved the following:
- Published Technical Papers at reputable international conferences
- Active involvement in international engineering organisations such as CIGRÉ, IEEE and IET (e.g. participation in Working Groups)
- Chartered Engineer status
- Knowledge of low carbon technologies
Qualifications
Essential
Level 8 in Electrical Engineering experience is essential
Location
This role is based in ESB EMP Dublin office but travel to project locations both nationally and internationally as required, is a key requirement of the role

Reporting to the Senior Team Leader, Power Systems Studies Team, Network System Services, Transmission and Distribution Engineering.
Salary
€57,000 to €68,000 per annum
