Senior Professional Engineer - Substation Assets (Mobile Substations & Standby DC Systems)
We are seeking an engineer with at least 5 years' experience in substation maintenance, asset management, refurbishment and electrical infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will support the ESB mobile substation fleet and standby DC systems portfolio, helping to maintain critical network resilience and asset performance across the transmission and distribution network.
In support of ESB's strategic objectives of decarbonising electricity, empowering customers and building resilient infrastructure, the role will focus on the maintenance, refurbishment and development of critical network assets, including mobile substations and standby DC systems. The successful candidate will lead technical investigations, support asset lifecycle management and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in line with ESB's Net Zero by 2040 strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver maintenance programmes, asset health initiatives and projects to the highest safety and quality standards.
- Provide technical leadership across Mobile Substations and Standby DC System projects and maintenance programmes.
- Support the maintenance, refurbishment, deployment and technical development of the ESB mobile substation fleet.
- Act as Lead Engineer for complex fault investigations involving standby DC systems, battery chargers, batteries, auxiliary systems and associated substation infrastructure.
- Develop lifecycle, refurbishment and replacement strategies for mobile substation and standby DC assets.
- Provide technical support on standby DC systems, battery chargers, batteries and associated auxiliary systems within the transmission and distribution network.
- Monitor emerging technologies, standards and customer requirements to support continuous improvement.
- Develop, review and maintain technical policies, standards, specifications and guidance documentation.
- Contribute to the development of Transmission & Distribution maintenance policies, online monitoring and diagnostics, asset health and lifecycle management strategies.
- Support ongoing substation maintenance research and publish technical papers at recognised international conferences.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Proven experience delivering complex electrical infrastructure projects in substations, standby DC systems, industrial power systems or similar critical infrastructure environments.
- 3rd‑level Engineering qualification or equivalent work experience.
- Strong project and programme management skills.
- Technical knowledge of standby DC systems, battery chargers, batteries and associated auxiliary systems.
- Proven track record in delivering maintenance projects.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills in a technically complex environment.
- Knowledge of relevant design, health, safety and environmental standards and legislation.
- Full clean Category B driving license
Desirable
- Membership of a recognised professional engineering body.
- Knowledge of T&D substations.
- Experience with mobile substations or temporary power solutions.
- Experience with protection and control systems.
- Experience with asset management, condition monitoring and lifecycle planning.
- Willingness to develop expertise across both mobile substations and standby DC systems.
Location
This is primarily a site‑based role. The reporting base will be at The Sidings, Grand Canal Quay, Dublin or Eastgate, Little Island, Cork

Salary
€59,000 - €70,000 Per annum
