The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will play a key role in the delivery of specialist geotechnical engineering services from feasibility through to construction stage of EMP projects for ESB. This role involves close collaboration with design teams, ESB partners, and Contractors to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advanced geotechnical expertise and technical leadership on complex and challenging projects, ensuring high‑quality engineering outcomes.
- Perform detailed geotechnical design and analysis, including foundations, retaining structures, ground improvement, earthworks, and solutions for soft ground conditions such as peat.
- Assess geotechnical stability and performance, including slope stability analyses, dam and embankment evaluations, and interpretation of soil and rock parameters to support design and construction.
- Develop, maintain, and manage Geotechnical Risk Registers, establishing mitigation strategies and response plans throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead and oversee ground investigation activities, including specifying, procuring, managing, and interpreting GI data, supported by desk studies and site walk‑overs.
- Conduct failure investigations and root cause analyses, preparing comprehensive technical reports and ensuring compliance with geotechnical standards and best practices.
- Maintain strong commercial awareness across all project stages, ensuring geotechnical inputs support efficient, cost‑effective, and value‑driven delivery.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Minimum 5 years relevant geotechnical consultancy experience.
- Familiarity with applicable Codes and Standards and industry current best practice
- Experience with soil mechanics computer analysis and design packages (e.g. Oasys suite etc)
- Extensive experience of working with a wide range of challenging ground types including peat and karst ground
- Knowledge of recent Geotechnical Research/Developments pertinent to our business
- Excellent Communication and report writing skills
- Experience with working in multi-disciplinary teams delivering small to large scale projects.
- Experience in the use of Eurocodes
- Full driving licence and access to a car
- Level 8 Degree in Civil Engineering
Desirable
- A recognisable Level 9 degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or related discipline
- Chartered status of a recognised Professional Institution
Location
This role is based in either E&MP Dublin/ Cork offices but travel to project locations as required is a key requirement of the role.

Salary
€59,000 - €70,000 per annum
