The Generation Engineering department in Engineering and Major Projects is the Centre of Engineering for ESB’s generation businesses and provides consultancy services in generation technology. This includes optimising the long-term performance of the Generation Assets through process performance optimisation and portfolio long term asset management, as well as continuously driving improvements in overhaul management, safety, technical and engineering standards, and the delivery of new power plant projects as part of the ESB Strategy on “Net Zero by 2040”.

The Team Lead C&I is a Senior role in the C&I Team and will report to the C&I Manager in Generation Technology, to lead, execute, plan, and deliver the transition from engineering through to construction and commissioning of C&I work scopes as required by business needs  in principal client work streams with standardised engineering and commissioning work practices, while also playing a leading role in the professional development of the team.

 

Key Responsibilities

Working across different types of generation assets and technologies your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:  

  • Maintaining a core focus on transition from engineering to site and site execution for C&I scopes, executing, leading and supporting this across the ESB generation portfolio as required per business needs.
  • Lead and execute the delivery of C&I site work scopes on overhauls and new assets to ESB and regulatory requirements in liaison with other C&I Team Leads, internal specialists and teams, and contractors, ensuring compliance with relevant statutory and technical requirements in relation to control & process engineering.
  • Efficiently utilise available C&I and OT Cyber resources to deliver works.
  • Provide leading input to the C&I work plan development and support C&I Manager and Team Leads with the optimisation of resources utilisation, including recruitment as required.  
  • Supervise as required on-site activities of contractors and subcontractors for C&I scope and play a leading role in Commissioning (e.g., loop checks, function checks, protection tests, etc).
  • Review of Inspection & Test Plans for C&I equipment as and when released by OEM /contractors and highlight deficiencies.
  • Lead and co-ordinate design review proposals, schedules, test protocols, etc involving other specialists as required.
  • Monitoring of progress of C&I ITPs and witnessing of Hold / Inspection Points as delegated.
  • Develop ESB protocols for equipment to be commissioned in ESB scope and missing elements from contractors’ scope.
  • Witness and acceptance on ESB behalf for testing and commissioning (as required).
  • Provide on time submission of all ESB deliverables to the Contractor during all phases of the project including design, installation, and commissioning.
  • Represent ESB and liaise and oversee installation and commissioning works associated with the works.
  • Participate in review of concepts, protocols and project documentation submitted to ESB and lead input to requirements for FAT, SAT, and Commissioning.
  • Management of Technical Clarifications with consultants/contractors/utility providers or their representatives during all stages of the projects from design to commissioning.  
  • Management of quality on assigned contracts in accordance with responsibilities listed in the Project Quality Plan.
  • Flexibility to act as an additional Team Lead C&I during periods of low activity on C&I site activities, or as Lead C&I Engineer/Specialist roles on select major capital greenfield or brownfield projects, including Lifecycle and Risk Management.
  • Developing and maintaining technical and commercial knowledge both in self and direct reports of C&I systems and technologies in generation station assets.
  • Driving C&I Engineering excellence within the team by alignment of internal standards, specifications and working practices with ESB business needs, industry and relevant norms, standards, guidelines, competency models and codes of practice.
  • Promoting and leading the safety management culture across all activities by taking ownership and demonstrating visible commitment to safety in all works/project stages and ensure compliance with organisational quality procedures.
  • Line management, mentorship and development of direct reports and junior engineers inclusive of CPD, competencies, objectives, continuous performance, continuous improvement, graduate training, and graduate development plans in alignment with project, organisational and professional objectives.

 

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • Have a minimum of 7 years’ relevant working experience and shall already hold a Senior C&I role in the generation sector or a comparable industry.
  • The candidate will hold a 3rd level qualification or equivalent in engineering or equivalent with considerable experience in C&I technologies, projects, and practices.
  • Possess significant competence of generating plant C&I systems and applications including SCADA, DCS and PLC systems, OT environment, HMI and control networks, field instrumentation and control devices, plant protection, safety systems and devices.
  • Demonstrated ability of having led, managed, and delivered large and/or complex C&I works/projects during engineering, installation and commissioning up to handover to O&M.
  • Significant experience of power plant operations and maintenance technologies, systems, procedures, and practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in brownfield C&I upgrades or new build projects.
  • Demonstrated internal and external stakeholder management and project/scope co-ordination involving multiple business units, contractors or third parties.
  • Well versed with Health, Safety and Environment Standards and procedures, including Risk Assessment and Method Statement, ESB processes and practices.
  • Knowledge of IT infrastructure as relevant to Industrial Control Systems and the interfaces with other plant systems, third party systems or corporate networks.
  • Strong time management, work prioritisation, communication and report writing skills.
  • Full clean driving license and flexibility to travel nationally and internationally.

 

Desirable

  • Experience and familiarity with Eirgrid and SONI grid code compliance requirements and tests.
  • Competence in OEM control systems handling and troubleshooting (SCADA, DCS, PLC, HMI, etc.)
  • History of working on ESB projects.
  • Chartered Engineer status with an internationally recognised engineering institution or demonstrable CPD evidence of progress towards same is preferred.
  • ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or demonstrable CPD evidence of progress towards same is preferred.
  • Demonstrated CPD in the following specialisms OT Cybersecurity, Functional Safety, HAZOP, ATEX and Intrinsic Safety.
  • Demonstrated active engagement with engineering institutions or professional societies for embedding good engineering practice in projects and work practices.
  • Demonstrated people, line management, mentorship skills.
  • Demonstrated automation project management skills.
  • OEM systems training certificates (SCADA, DCS, PLC, HMI, etc.)

 

Reporting to

C&I Manager, Generation Engineering, Generation Technology.

 

Location   

This position will be based in Engineering & Major Projects at either 1 Dublin Airport Central or Eastgate Cork and will involve occasional travel to FATs and generation sites during commissioning stages of projects.

Salary 

€69,000 - €81,000 Per annum
