Specialist Lead, Engineering Standards & Materials

Vacancy Number:  28607
Category:  Engineering - Other
Job Type:  Full-time

Are you looking for a new challenge? A Brighter, zero carbon future awaits!

An opportunity has arisen in Networks Engineering, the home of engineering capability and technical expertise for the ESB Group in delivering our Net Zero 2040 targets. The successful candidate will work in the Standards & Materials group in High Voltage (HV) Linear Assets Delivery in Networks Engineering.

In support of ESB’s strategy to build a more resilient electricity network, Engineering & Major Projects requires a technically strong individual to support the development and application of engineering standards and data insights for transmission overhead line capital programmes.

The role sits at the interface between Design, Standards, Materials, Asset Management and Project Delivery, ensuring alignment between engineering principles, asset behaviour and the application of data within transmission capital programmes.

In addition to providing technical leadership to the overhead line group, the successful candidate will play a key role in the management, interpretation and application of engineering data, ensuring that inspection outputs, contractor data and field observations are translated into consistent asset information. This will support the evolution of engineering standards, asset assessment methodologies and modelling approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in the delivery of design for overhead lines from 38 kV to 400 kV.
  • Support the development and application of overhead line standards, specifications and design methodologies across transmission capital projects
  • Provide engineering input on material performance, failure mechanisms and long-term asset behaviour to inform design and specification decisions
  • Support technical review of design outputs, ensuring alignment with ESB safety, quality and performance requirements and driving continuous improvement in standards and practices
  • Ensure alignment between standards, asset data and inspection outputs within project prioritisation and specification
  • Lead the management and quality assurance of overhead line data, ensuring consistent interpretation and application across transmission capital programme delivery
  • Provide recognised technical guidance on the translation of engineering data into transmission asset behaviour insights, supporting alignment between observed condition, deterioration mechanisms and modelling assumptions
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of condition assessment, interpretation frameworks and intervention mapping to enable consistent and risk informed decision making
  • Analyse condition trends and failure modes, informing improvements to engineering standards, specifications and intervention strategies
  • Work with Asset Management to ensure engineering data and insights are effectively translated into decision support inputs

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

The successful candidate will have the qualities listed below:

  • Level 8 degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in the design of Overhead Transmission Lines
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Overhead line components, materials and failure mechanisms
    • Condition assessment and engineering interpretation of defects
    • Engineering standards and design principles
  • Experience working with engineering data, inspection outputs or asset information
  • Ability to interpret technical data and apply engineering judgement in a structured and consistent manner
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • The demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • A proven track record of success contributing to the training and development of technical professionals.
  • Valid driver's license for ROI, access to a car, and flexibility to travel nationwide.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting design, standards and specification development
  • Exposure to asset health frameworks, condition indexing and deterioration modelling approaches
  • Experience working across Engineering, Asset Management and Project Delivery interfaces

Location

This position will be based in ESB EMP Dublin or Cork office but travel to project locations as required is a key requirement of the role.

ESB is committed to smart working – combining digital tools with a culture of trust and empowerment to enable flexible ways of working.
