The Commissioning & SCS Team in ESB Engineering & Major Projects is the centre of engineering for ESB’s Transmission & Distribution businesses, as well as providing consultancy services in T&D technology for external clients.

 

The Substation Control System group is a key part of Transmission & Distribution Delivery Group responsible for the Specifications, Scoping, Designs & Pre-commissioning of SCADA Systems for high voltage transmission and distribution assets of ESB Networks.

The role of the SCS Specialist is to be a subject matter expert in their field, driving Group’s further development and expertise in substation automation and control systems. As well as carrying out a range of activities in substation automation, a key component of the role is to develop the expertise and capability of engineers across the wider SCS Group. In addition, he SCS Specialist will be expected to actively contribute to Group’s business development and to represent TDD, EMP and ESB Group as a subject matter expert where required.

International travel, travel within Ireland and participation in international conferences and working groups is a feature of this role.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Responsibilities will cover the items below:

 

  • Provide technical expertise across the Substation Control System group, including the provision of training and mentoring to engineers in all aspects of conceptual design, design review, pre-commissioning, and commissioning support for the delivery of transmission and distribution substation control system projects.
  • Design and develop standardised control and automation solutions, including elementary schematic diagrams, work instructions, and departmental procedures, to support the efficient and high-quality delivery of projects.
  • Support the development of maintenance strategies for all substation automation OT equipment.
  • Design and implement a strategy for the delivery of substation automation system upgrades across the suite of installed legacy OT systems.
  • Provide expertise in the development of technical specifications for SCS equipment term contracts and assist with technical evaluations as part of ESB Networks procurement processes.
  • Develop methodologies and procedures for testing IEC61850 based digital substation applications using dedicated IEC 61850 configuration and testing tools and equipment.
  • Drive a training and development mentorship program within the SCS group to ensure development of engineering capability across the area.
  • Provide technical assistance to engineers across projects as required, including regular on-site and Test lab in-person support as required.
  • Provide technical leadership to the team through the delivery of technical presentations and training modules to the SCS group and wider EMP TDD areas.
  • Develop and maintain a state-of-the-art Test lab environment in 1DAC for the testing and development of digital substation solutions.
  • Undertake Lead Engineer’s role in select technical projects as per the requirements.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

We are looking for the following skills;

 

Essential

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in substation control systems.
  • Proven ability to work in a team to a high level of performance.
  • A strong understanding of all elements of substation control system scoping, specifications, design, costing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • A commercial and project management capability.
  • A flexible approach to work, especially where necessary to delivery excellent customer service.
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills.
  • A proven track record of success contributing to the training and development of technical professionals.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Full site working approvals and be a member of SCS on call support team
  • Expert knowledge of Operation, Maintenance & Fault Investigation for substation automation systems
  • Substation Design experience and working knowledge of Eplan P8 or equivalent
  • Expert knowledge of substation control system protocols, e.g. IEC 60870-5-101, 103, 104 and IEC 61850.
  • Knowledge of Cyber Security policies and procedures in substation automation systems to ensure ongoing compliance with international best practice.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Essential

 

  • Either 3rd Level qualification or equivalent work experience is essential

 

 

Location

The successful candidate may combine remote / smart working within the jurisdiction, with attendance at base for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and subject to ongoing review.

 

This role is based in either ESB E&MP Dublin/Cork offices but travel to project locations as required, is a key requirement of the role

Salary 

 

€65,000 to €76,000 per annum
