Systems Engineering Linux Team, IT Delivery
Position Description
We are now looking for an energetic and enthusiastic IT Professional to join our IT Delivery team. We design, deliver and support all activities associated with ESB’s IT strategy through innovative IT solutions. We operate one of the most technologically advanced IT and telecommunications infrastructures in the country running over 500 applications as well as being the largest SAP user in Ireland. We also have one of the largest IT spends in the country and we deliver a large number of new multi-million IT projects each year.
Our underlying infrastructure includes Linux and Windows servers running on Dell hardware and VMware virtualisation technologies. Enterprise data storage technologies include IBM Flash arrays, Brocade SAN switches, and Veritas backup technologies. Routing and switching within the infrastructure is based on Cisco technologies.
The Systems Engineering Team is responsible for managing the Red Hat Enterprise Linux server infrastructure in ESB. This comprises over 800 servers, the majority of which run as virtual servers on over 100 hosts running VMware ESXi on Dell PowerEdge hardware.
The majority of servers are hosted in ESB datacentre suites in South West Dublin and North West Dublin and in Microsoft Azure. A small number of servers are also located at other locations nationwide. Due to increased activity levels and growing complexity, the team requires an intermediate level Red Hat Enterprise Linux Support Specialist with a minimum of three year’s experience in supporting enterprise server infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work in the Systems Engineering team which is responsible for the procurement, management, maintenance & monitoring of Red Hat Enterprise Linux server resources which host ESB’s mission critical SAP and business application systems.
- Deploy, maintain and monitor Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems (physical, virtual and, cloud-hosted) to ensure high availability for business-critical applications.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues independently, escalating as and when necessary to senior team members or vendors.
- Administer Red Hat management tools such as Satellite and Ansible Automation Platform for patching, configuration and lifecycle management.
- Implement routine automation using Bash and Ansible to improve efficiency and reduce manual tasks.
- Apply cybersecurity best practices including patching, access control and system hardening to maintain compliance.
- Support hosting of SAP and database environments (SAP HANA, DB2, Oracle) on RHEL infrastructure.
- Maintain clear documentation and communicate effectively with stakeholders for audits, reporting and cross-team collaboration.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Proven ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve production issues independently, while still being confident to escalate as necessary.
- Hands-on experience deploying and maintaining RHEL systems (virtual and physical) to ensure availability. Understanding of cybersecurity best practices (patching, access control, hardening) in RHEL environments.
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux or other relevant IT Industry accreditations. Familiarity with Red Hat management tools such as Satellite and Ansible Automation Platform.
- Automation experience using Bash and Ansible (or equivalent) for routine tasks.
- Effective stakeholder communication and documentation skills for audit, reporting and cross-team collaboration.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to knowledge sharing.
- Recognised third level computing qualification or equivalent work experience, and a minimum of three years’ relevant experience
Desirable
- Experience hosting SAP HANA and related components in RHEL environments.
- Experience of working with Cloud platforms, preferably Azure.
- Knowledge and/or experience in containerisation and orchestration – Kubernetes or OpenShift platform administration.
Location
This position will be based in Fitzwilliam 27, ESB Head Office, Dublin.

Salary
€49,000 - €58,500 per annum (depending on experience)
