Position Description

Group Tax plays a critical role in ensuring ESB meets its tax obligations across Ireland, the UK, and other jurisdictions in which it operates, while complying with the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies. ESB paid over €800 million in taxes in 2025, reflecting both taxes borne and taxes collected on behalf of the Exchequer.

 

The Tax Manager supports the Group Tax Manager in delivering the Group Tax Strategy and maintaining a robust Tax Control Framework. This role combines technical expertise, strong business partnering, and leadership of key tax processes. The Tax Manager will work closely with finance, legal, commercial, and operational teams to ensure tax is effectively managed, risks are identified early, and processes continue to improve.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clear, commercially focused tax advice across all tax heads to business units and senior stakeholders.
  • Support major transactions, business cases, negotiation strategies, and forecasting from a tax perspective.
  • Lead the corporation tax compliance cycle for Irish and UK subsidiaries, ensuring timely and accurate filings.
  • Review and lead tax provisioning, ensuring accurate tax inputs to statutory accounts, management reporting, and forecasts.
  • Oversee transfer pricing documentation and related calculations/obligations (Country by Country, Interest Limitation, UK Corporate Interest Restriction).
  • Implement and maintain the Group Tax Governance and Control Framework, including UK Senior Accounting Officer compliance, supporting risk identification and escalation.
  • Lead the Group’s tax forecasting process, ensuring accurate projections and alignment with ESB Integrated Business Planning.
  • Ensure Pillar II tax provisioning and sustainability related tax reporting are accurate and compliant.
  • Drive process improvements and tax technology initiatives, leveraging data analytics tools to enhance reporting and forecasting quality.
  • Represent Group Tax in cross‑functional projects and deliver effective stakeholder communication across the organisation.

 

Experience and Qualifications 

Essential

  • Minimum 10 years in a tax role, including CTA (Institute of Tax) or CTC (Institute of Chartered Accountants) qualification and 7+ years PQE.
  • Strong data analytics capability (e.g., Power Query, Alteryx).
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative and deliver results to strict deadlines.
  • Good decision making, risk analysis and problem-solving capability.

 Desirable

  • Accountancy qualification.
  • In house experience within a multinational organisation

 

Location

This position will be based in Fitzwilliam 27, Dublin 2.

 

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

Salary

€83,300 - €101,600 per annum (depending on experience)
