Distributed Generation Environmental Specialist
Position description
Distributed Generation is a department within ESB Renewable Operations (ESB Generation and Trading) with responsibility for the management of the Operation and Maintenance of ESB’s distributed generation asset portfolio.
As part of delivery of the Net Zero by 2040 Strategy it is our ambition that we will generate 70% of our electricity generation from renewable assets by 2030 with 1.7GW of offshore wind, 3.5GW of onshore wind and 900MW of solar {dependent on planning and development) and also incorporates 500 MW of renewables enabling flexible generation assets including battery energy storage systems, peaking plants and grid support devices such as synchronous condensers.
Due to the projected significant expansion of the Distributed Generation portfolio over the coming years, ESB is seeking to appoint a Distributed Generation Environmental Specialist within the Distributed Generation O&M team. This role will form part of the SHE team in ensuring Environmental compliance on all Distributed Generation sites including grid scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, solar farms, open cycle gas turbine technology and synchronous condensers. Other technologies may also feature at a future date within this O&M department.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with relevant Environment legislation, accredited external standards and company standards including compliance with relevant site Industrial Emissions Licences and ISO14001 certification.
- Manage and co-ordinate the Environmental Distributed Generation Manual.
- Responsible for management of environmental licenced activities.
- Manage greenhouse gas permit obligations for Flexible Gas Plant in Distributed Generation and deliver Annual Environmental Returns (AER) for relevant assets in the department.
- Develop plans to drive continuous improvement and ensure that all improvement programmes in all areas or Environment are implemented within time, cost and scope targets.
- Manage key relationships with internal and external stakeholders in areas of Environment, including the various regulatory and licencing requirements under which the Distributed Generation assets operate.
- Manage Environmental incidents, accidents, and near-misses, including follow-up, investigation, and reporting.
- Conduct routine Environmental inspections and site audits, reporting findings to site and senior management.
- Co-ordinate Environmental Training requirements for Distributed Generation
- Drive continuous improvement and knowledge sharing in areas of Environment across Distributed Generation and wider Renewable Operations group.
- Providing support where required to SHE Team and wider Distributed Generation Production Team.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- 5 years experience in delivery of Environmental Management in Industry.
- Environmental qualification
- Proven track record of engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable
- Knowledge/Experience of Utility/Energy Industry
- Work experience in Green House Gas permits/audits and Environmental License compliance.
Location
The successful candidate will be based at ESB Generation and Trading Offices in Dublin. Short term domestic travel to Distributed Generation sites in ROI are a feature during the course of their work.
Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.
Reporting To
The successful candidate will report to the Manager, Distributed Generation.

Salary
€59,980 - €70,564 per annum
