Position Description

ESB Trading is the trading business within ESB Generation and Wholesale Markets which operates within the I-SEM, BETTA and Commodity Markets and interfaces with the Production and Asset Management areas as well as the Business Customers group in Electric Ireland. The Trading group is responsible for developing and implementing innovative trading, settlement and risk management processes which enable the business to respond successfully to the challenges and opportunities of the markets we operate within.

 

The Front office area comprises the Asset Trading team, GB Prompt Team and the ISEM Gas & Power team, Portfolio Optimisation and Customer & Origination Team.  As part of the ongoing change and to recognise the growing of importance of a strong analytical capability across the area, a dedicated analytics support will be provided by the team.

 

The Trading Desk Market Analytics team has responsibility for providing analytical support across all of Front Office area, commodity markets and trading horizons that ESB operates in – primarily, but not limited to, gas, power and coal in the ISEM and GB markets. 

 

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have responsibility for:

  • Liaising with managers and staff across the Front Office teams in order to deliver robust, detailed and timely and analysis to the desk traders to help ensure that they are suitably equipped to understand current and forecast market conditions and to allow for optimal trading actions to be taken
  • Assisting Front office managers in the markets that they operate in and developing trading scenarios to support trading activity decision making
  • Conduct in depth competitor and market intelligence analysis to inform trading strategies as required
  • Preparing and delivering regular reports on daily, weekly and monthly basis demonstrating ESB Trading performance and providing suitable commentary to explain results
  • Working with the other teams in Trading, most notably the Modelling team, to ensure that all analytic activity across the Trading group is conducted in a seamless and efficient way to ensure that a consistent view of ESB Trading’s positions is presented across all trading horizons
  • Ensure technical data for each generation unit is maintained and updated correctly on an ongoing basis, liaising with ESB Asset Management as required
  • Ensuring that Data Management processes and systems are robust and fit for purpose and to ensure that these are updated on regular basis as required to meet changing business requirements
  • Working across various Analytic teams to help the delivery of digital and data driven solutions across front office teams and traders

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

  • A minimum of 7 years relevant experience from a range of disciplines:
    • Electricity and/or fuel markets and/or
    • Experience in operation/maintenance of generating stations and possess a good   level of numerical, IT, analytical and communications skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the economic dispatch of power stations and drivers of the power and gas markets
  • Ability to quickly translate complex analysis and accurately interpret market and system data and to be able to effectively communicate this information to allow for implementation of optimal trading decisions
  • Excellent organisational and leadership qualities
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication and reporting skills
  • You will be an excellent team member but self-motivated with the ability to work on your own initiative
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude to change with an ability to quickly adapt to dynamic trading and operating system conditions
  • You will have experience managing large data sets and experience using industry standard analytic tools such as MS Power BI and Tableau; Advanced Excel, R, Python or Matlab.

 

Qualifications

Essential

  • A third level qualification in Business, Maths, Computer Science, Engineering or other related quantitative subject or equivalent work experience is required.

 

Location

This position will be located in ESB Head Office, Dublin.

 

Reporting to

The successful candidate will report to the Trading Desk Manager.

 

General

While initial appointment will be to this position, rotation withing Generation and Trading may be a feature of the role.
