Modelling and Market Analysis is a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team which uses an integrated set of modelling tools to forecast the price of electricity and the profitability our assets in Ireland and GB. Modelling and Market Analysis provides a significant input to ESB’s generation portfolio optimisation, asset management & development, trading, tariff pricing and financial management.

 

We develop fundamental, algorithmic and statistical models, perform analysis and advise on strategies to help value and manage complex contracts and/or assets, as well as conduct ad-hoc bespoke analysis for our stakeholders. We constantly seek to improve and innovate how we undertake our analysis and keep up to date with the most recent advances in modelling and predictive analytics.

Position Description

 

This is a key role in ESB Generation & Trading Market Modelling group, specifically within the modelling function for Investment & Strategic Modelling. The Modelling Analyst role is to provide support to power market modelling processes to feed into key business decisions involving strategic asset management and investment, including the evaluation of medium to long term asset investment projects and other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

We are looking for a highly analytical individual who is capable of running key processes within the modelling function and analysing large volumes of data to provide insightful analysis. Your analysis skills coupled with energy market knowledge will allow you to create, develop and improve modelling processes.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Responsibilities will cover the items below:

  • Support the processes in market forecasts and plant operations from the 3-year horizon of the contracts market for the Irish and GB electricity markets, and up to 20+ years long term investment horizon.
  • Analyse market drivers to determine key modelling inputs and their impacts. Interpret model outputs and their impacts.
  • Gather and analyse data relating to modelling and the energy market and implementing these in modelling tools.
  • Provide modelling analysis and support the reporting to key stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain accurate modelling reports, enhance and analyse dashboards and communicate to various stakeholders on a timely basis.
  • Identify areas for improvement of systems and business processes.
  • Respond rapidly to business needs by providing ad-hoc business and analytical support.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

  • Minimum 3-5 years relevant experience
  • A passion for numbers and problem-solving
  • Proven ability to analyse large volume of data, collate and summarise them in presentable format to provide insights
  • A knowledge of statistical analysis in investigating trends, patterns, and relationships using quantitative approach
  • Highly proficient in advanced Microsoft Excel and other data-oriented software
  • Attention to detail with ability to work to tight deadlines whilst maintaining accuracy

 

Desirable

  • A knowledge of energy market and /or modelling tools (such as Plexos) is a distinct advantage
  • A knowledge of coding programmes such as Python, R or VBA and data systems such as SQL is a distinct advantage
  • Experience using data visualisation/reporting tools such as Power BI/Tableau or other business intelligence platforms

 

Qualifications

 

Essential

Degree qualified in Engineering, Economics, Statistics, Data Analytics or Math related discipline or equivalent work experience is required.

Reporting to

The successful candidate will report to the Modelling Manager for Investment & Strategic Modelling.

 

Salary 

€40,000 to €50,000 per annum
