Position Description


ESB Trading is a leading Irish wholesale energy trading company, active in both the Irish and GB energy markets as well as European commodities markets. ESB Trading delivers essential asset optimisation services, risk management and wholesale market access to ESB Group.


Modelling and Market Analytics is a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team within ESB Trading, that uses an integrated set of modelling tools to forecast power prices, describe market dynamics and price complex products for the markets in which we operate.  To provide this essential information to our traders and portfolio managers, we rely on thorough analyses of market fundamentals and robust data solutions. We constantly seek to improve and innovate our analysis techniques and keep up to date with the most recent advances in modelling and predictive analytics.


We are now looking for a Senior Quantitative Analyst with experience in wholesale energy markets. You will join a team of analysts with strong quantitative and technical skills, enabling them to bridge the gap between trading, modelling and data. This position is responsible for the development, utilization and maintenance of the necessary models, procedures and systems required for modeling the economics of a large diverse regulated thermal and renewable generation fleet and a multi-commodity fuel & power portfolio. Applications include forecasting power prices, plant output and fuel requirements, evaluating the grid impact of renewables, optimizing economics of battery storage and more. The models developed may involve linear & non-linear optimization of unit commitment and dispatch, regression analysis, time series forecasting, derivative pricing, stochastic simulation of markets, renewables & demand, trade valuation and dynamic hedging.

Key Responsibilities


  • Carrying out analysis and reporting of the energy markets with a view to informing and steering trading strategy
  • Working with Trading and Asset Management teams to relay market insights and assess effect of energy markets on station profitability
  • Liaising with the trading teams in order to communicate market insights and strategy proposal
  • Conduct in depth competitor and market intelligence analysis to inform trading strategies
  • Preparing and delivering regular reports on daily, weekly and monthly basis demonstrating ESB Trading performance and providing suitable commentary to explain results
  • Working with the other teams in Trading to ensure that all analytic activity across the Trading group is conducted in a seamless and efficient way to ensure that a consistent view of ESB Trading’s positions is presented across all trading horizons
  • Engage in data management process to ensure that accurate and timely data is being used to inform trading strategy


The successful candidate will:


  • Have the ability to quickly translate complex analysis and accurately interpret market and system data and to be able to effectively communicate this information to allow for implementation of optimal trading decisions
  • Have a passion for numbers and problem-solving with an ability to analyse large volume of data, collate and summarise them in presentable format to generate insights
  • You will be self-motivated with the ability to work on your own initiative
  • You will be able to demonstrate a positive attitude to change 



Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Knowledge or experience is required from a range of disciplines including Electricity and/or fuel markets and/or, Trading over prompt horizons
  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years relevant experience
  • Possess a good level of numerical, IT, analytical and communications skills
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication and reporting skills
  • Ability to quickly adapt to dynamic trading and operating system conditions
  • Capability to collaborate with a large range of stakeholders to deliver
  • Experience managing large data sets and experience using industry standard analytic tools such as MS Power BI and Tableau; Advanced Excel, R, Python or Matlab





A 3rd Level Qualification in Business, Maths, Computer Science, Engineering or other related quantitative subject or equivalent work experience is essential.

Salary Range 


€50,000 - €60,000
