Position Description


The Energy Innovation Specialist will be a member of the Emerging Technology and R&D team. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious engineering/science professional to work at the cutting edge of energy technology and new business development. She/he will develop a thorough understanding of the challenges facing utilities including the need for effective innovation management and new business lines built around emerging technologies.

Emerging Technologies could include: Renewable energy, Energy Storage, Demand Response, Digitisation, Ocean Energy, Hydrogen etc.


The role will involve working with the business units across the Group to assess new technologies and associated business opportunities, prepare project / business proposals and support the deployment of pilot and demonstration technology projects.

This will include initiatives to ensure customer centric thinking is prevalent, effective collaboration occurs across the business units where appropriate and innovations are delivered with an agile approach.



Key Responsibilities


  • Build awareness of emerging, cross cutting energy technologies and promote technology innovation across ESB
  • Lead collaboration internally across ESB group and externally to develop opportunities to exploit emerging technologies
  • Enhance ESB reputation through promoting ESB’s innovation capability and achievements externally at forums, conferences etc.
  • Provide techno-economic evaluations for emerging, cross-cutting energy technologies and associated business models
  • Translate innovative pilot project concepts into project designs and deployment plans by working closely with other business units
  • Deliver engineering support around emerging energy technologies to new business lines under development at ESB Innovation Hub, X_Site.



Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • At least 5 years relevant experience in a similar role
  • Ability to effectively plan and organise around a variety of different ongoing activities
  • Excellent interpersonal, report writing and presentation skills
  • Experience in delivery of engineering projects to the highest standards of safety
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and achieve challenging targets
  • Proven ability to work well as part of a flexible team and working collaboratively
  • Ability to work innovatively on new challenges and opportunities





A relevant 3rd level qualification or equivalent work experience is essential.




The position will be located in ESB’s Head Office, Dublin.


ESB is committed to offering flexibility in ways of working and we call that Smart Working – combining digital tools with a culture of trust and empowerment to enable flexible and remote ways of working. The successful candidate may combine remote / smart working within the jurisdiction, with attendance at base for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and subject to ongoing review.

Working with other like-minded members, we’ve committed to developing solutions that will ensure remote and hybrid working can become a sustainable part of our business. 




The salary range for this role is €53,000 - 65,000pa.
