Position Description

 

Within the ESB Group, ESB Trading is a leading Irish wholesale energy trading business, active in both the Irish and GB energy markets as well as European commodities markets delivering delivers essential asset optimisation services, risk management and wholesale market access solutions.

 

Modelling and Market Analytics is a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team within ESB Trading, that uses an integrated set of modelling tools to forecast power prices, describe market dynamics and price complex products for the markets in which we operate.  To provide this essential information to our traders and portfolio managers, we rely on thorough analyses of market fundamentals and robust data solutions. We constantly seek to improve and innovate our analysis techniques and keep up to date with the most recent advances in modelling and predictive analytics.

 

We are now looking for a Senior Market Data Analyst. The Market Data Analyst will be responsible for analysing large and complex data sets related to energy markets and providing insights and recommendations to support the company's energy trading activities. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of data analysis methodologies and will be able to extract insights from large data sets to inform decision making.

 

As ESB and the wider industry transitions to a low carbon future, working in Market Modelling and Market Analytics offers a unique opportunity to significantly impact ESB’s trajectory in the energy market including the modelling of ESB’s existing and new generation assets including wind, solar and battery assets.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

The successful candidate will have responsibility for:

 

  • Carrying out analysis and reporting of the energy markets with a view to informing and steering trading strategy.
  • Collaborate with trading teams to provide data-driven insights and recommendations to support their trading activities.
  • Collect, clean, and process energy market data from multiple sources, including public data sets and internal data sources.
  • Analyse energy market data to identify trends, patterns, and relationships in demand, pricing, and other market dynamics.
  • Develop and implement statistical models to inform energy trading strategies.
  • Participate in projects to enhance data collection and analysis processes, including automating data collection and developing new analysis tools.
  • Preparing and delivering regular reports and dashboards on daily, weekly and monthly basis demonstrating ESB Trading performance and providing suitable commentary to explain results;
  • To diagnose and fix issues with existing reports/dashboards/data feeds.

 

 

The successful candidate will:

 

  • Have the ability to quickly translate complex analysis and accurately interpret market and system data and to be able to effectively communicate this information to allow for implementation of optimal trading decisions
  • Be able to demonstrate excellent communication and reporting skills  
  • Have a passion for numbers and problem-solving with an ability to analyse large volume of data, collate and summarise them in presentable format to generate insights
  • Have the technical proficiency regarding database design development, data models, techniques for data mining, and segmentation.
  • You will be self-motivated with the ability to work on your own initiative
  • You will be able to demonstrate a positive attitude to change with an ability to quickly adapt to dynamic trading and operating system conditions.  

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

 

  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience
  • Experience with managing large data sets and developing data visualisations using industry standard analytic tools such as MS Power BI; Advanced Excel, SQL, R, Python
  • Data mining of complex datasets, using R, Python, SQL etc.
  • Quantitative and analytical skills, with the ability to collate and present results in a concise, creative, and professional manner
  • Excellent capability in SQL to extract data from databases
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication and reporting skills
  • Capability to collaborate with a large range of stakeholders to deliver business solutions that drive value.
  • You will be able to demonstrate a positive attitude to change with an ability to quickly adapt to dynamic trading and operating system conditions.  

 

Desirable

 

  •  Knowledge or experience is required from a range of disciplines including Electricity and/or fuel markets and/or, Trading over prompt horizons

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • 3rd Level Qualification in Business, Maths, Computer Science, Engineering or other related quantitative subject or equivalent work experience is required.

 

 

Location

 

This position is based in F27, Dublin.

Reporting to

 

The successful candidate will report to the Trading Services Manager within the Modelling and Market Analysis Team.

 

 

Salary

 

€54,500 - €64,000
