Position:            Project Engineer – Distributed Generation Teams, Asset Development

Applications are invited for the positions of Project Engineers within the Distributed Generation  teams in Asset Development.

 

Position Description

 

Asset Development is tasked with identifying, developing and constructing new investment opportunities on behalf of ESB Group. Asset Development activities comprise identifying and developing opportunities to enhance our portfolio to realise our Brighter Future strategy. The opportunities are managed through development and construction to commercial operation. The Flexible Technology Development unit within Asset Development has successfully developed flexible generation, battery and synchronous compensator projects in the last two years.

EirGrid and ESB Networks are developing market competitions for building long duration energy storage (LDES) projects.  Flexible Technology Development is responsible for developing a pipeline of generation and LDES projects and system support technologies (eg synchronous compensation), along with opportunities for flexible generation assets to meet market requirements.

The successful candidates will support the Project Director on assigned project development activities such as establishing techno-commercial feasibility of projects, landowner engagement, overseeing planning activities and project design.  The role will involve working closely with team members across the various business units in ESB including engineering, planning and legal specialists.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Support project teams in assessing and developing opportunities, including greenfield and brownfield sites, new technologies and acquisitions.
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders to secure permits, authorisations, planning and connection agreements.
  • Deliver assigned work to ESB project management standards, meeting technical, commercial, legal, procurement and programme requirements.
  • Support preparation of projects for market competitions, including storage, capacity and system services.
  • Research technology areas with commercial potential.
  • Manage procurement and contract strategy, and coordinate project contracts.
  • Support delivery of Safe and Sound across all projects.
  • Promote a strong team culture and open communication across the project team and Asset Development.
  • Research project or industry issues affecting delivery and present conclusions.

 

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

  • Ability to assess opportunities across technical, environmental, regulatory, market and financial factors.
  • Experience working independently, owning projects.
  • Ability to plan and communicate requirements to progress projects and new initiatives.
  • Third-level qualification in engineering, commercial, planning or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ postgraduate experience.
  • Proven experience delivering projects.

 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of planning and permitting for large energy projects.
  • Experience negotiating with landowners and managing local stakeholder relationships.
  • Knowledge of energy generation technologies and their assessment.
  • Knowledge of energy markets and regulatory supports in Ireland and the UK.
  • Knowledge of procurement procedures.
  • Understanding of the power generation business.

 

Essential Qualifications

 

  • 3rd level primary degree in engineering, commercial, planning or equivalent.

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Project management or other business qualifications that complement the knowledge, skills and experience listed above.

 

Location

 

This position will be based in ESB’s Head Office, 27 Fitzwilliam Street Lower, Dublin, D02 KT92. 

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

Salary 

 

€59,980 - €70,564 per annum
