Position Description
The Senior Market Modelling Analyst is a key role within ESB Trading, supporting trading activities, asset management, and medium‑ to long‑term investment decision‑making. The role focuses on developing, maintaining, and operating market and system models to assess future market outcomes, asset profitability, and system behaviour across both the Irish and GB electricity markets.
This is a senior analytical position requiring deep expertise in wholesale electricity markets, power system operation, and market modelling tools, combined with strong programming, data analytics, and stakeholder‑management skills.

ESB Trading is a leader in the Irish wholesale energy market and is also active in the Great Britain energy market. ESB Trading delivers essential asset optimisation services, risk management, and wholesale market access to ESB Group.
The Modelling and Market Analysis team is a dynamic, multidisciplinary function that develops and operates a suite of fundamental, algorithmic, and statistical models to forecast wholesale electricity prices, system outcomes, and the profitability of generation and flexibility assets across Ireland and Great Britain.
The team provides critical decision‑making insights to a wide range of ESB stakeholders, including Portfolio Optimisation, Asset Management & Development, Strategy & Regulation, Finance, Insurance, and Trading. As ESB and the wider industry transitions to a low‑carbon future, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape investment, operational, and commercial outcomes in increasingly complex energy markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and operate fundamental energy market models (primarily in PLEXOS) covering day‑ahead, balancing, capacity and system services markets.
- Perform long‑term capacity expansion and investment modelling, selecting optimal technologies and capacities.
- Update and enhance day‑ahead and balancing market models for quarterly processes and ad‑hoc analysis.
- Analyse market drivers and interpret modelling outputs to assess impacts on prices, system outcomes, and asset profitability.
- Design, develop, and maintain Python‑based analytical tools for DAM, BM, and system services forecasting.
- Work with large datasets using Python, SQL Server, and analytics libraries, ensuring data quality and automation.
- Develop reporting and visualisation solutions using Power BI to communicate insights to stakeholders.
- Contribute to demand, wind, and price forecasting activities.
- Support hydrogen and emerging technology modelling within future energy scenarios.
- Engage closely with internal stakeholders, providing clear reports, presentations, and ad‑hoc analytical support.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Deep knowledge of wholesale electricity markets, particularly ISEM and/or GB markets.
- Strong understanding of power system operation and generation technologies.
- Extensive experience using PLEXOS for market modelling.
- High proficiency in Python programming for modelling, analytics, and optimisation workflows.
- Proven ability to translate complex modelling outputs into actionable business insights.
- Strong stakeholder‑management and communication skills.
- 5 years’ experience in the energy sector, ideally in market or system modelling roles.
Desirable
- Experience with optimisation tools such as Pyomo, Gurobi, CPLEX, GAMS.
- Experience with SQL databases and Power BI or equivalent BI tools.
- Experience in hydrogen or emerging technology modelling.
- Knowledge of additional market modelling platforms (e.g. KYOS).
- Experience applying statistical forecasting techniques to demand, wind, or prices.
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Analytics or related discipline.
- Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field is a strong advantage.
Location
This position will be based in ESB Head Office, 27 Fitzwilliam Street Lower, Dublin.
Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

The successful candidate will report to the Modelling Manager, ESB Trading.

Salary
€71,976 - €84,677 per annum
