Position Description 

 

ESB is a vertically integrated electric utility which holds leading market positions in power generation and electricity supply in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain. In addition, ESB is owner of all regulated electricity networks in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The Senior Manager, Group Tax is responsible for leading ESB Group’s tax strategy, governance, and compliance across all jurisdictions in which the Group operates. This role ensures the organisation meets its tax related statutory obligations while optimising tax efficiency, managing risk, ensuring appropriate governance and supporting strategic business objectives. The position provides expert tax advice on major transactions and leads the organisation in shaping tax policy and strategy while building and maintaining strong relationships with tax authorities and providing assurance to ESB’s Audit & Risk Committee.  

 

Key Responsibilities  

 

Strategic Leadership  

  • Develop and implement ESB Group’s tax strategy aligned with corporate objectives, revenue requirements, evolving digital landscape and ESB’s strategic ambition.  

  • Advise the Executive Director Group Finance & Commercial, Executive Team, and Board on key tax-related matters including tax implications of strategic decisions, including acquisitions, disposals, financing and employee-related matters.  

  • Monitor tax developments, particularly in Ireland and the UK and assess potential impacts on the Group’s operations.  

Tax Policy & Governance  

  • Set and maintain tax policies for ESB Group, ensuring consistency and compliance across all ESB entities.  

  • Advise on and support on all ESB Group policies with material tax aspects e.g. employee reward and expenses policies.  

  • Design and oversee a robust tax control framework to manage risk and ensure adherence to internal and external standards.  

  • Lead tax risk management initiatives, including identification, mitigation, and reporting of potential risks and exposures.  

Compliance & Reporting  

  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and submission of all corporation tax returns, VAT returns, Pillar 2 submissions, County by Country reports etc for ESB Group.  

  • Provide tax input into statutory and management reporting, including financial statements and forecasts.  

  • Ensure appropriate frameworks in place for monitoring, collection and reporting of other direct and indirect taxes such as payroll taxes, RCT and PSWT.  

  • Oversee compliance with all relevant tax legislation in Ireland, the UK, and other jurisdictions where ESB operates.  

Transaction Support  

  • Advise on tax aspects of major corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, disposals and treasury activities.  

  • Support business units on tax matters related to operational projects and employee arrangements.  

Stakeholder Engagement  

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with tax authorities (primarily Irish Revenue and HMRC) to ensure constructive engagement and resolution of issues.  

  • Act as the primary point of contact for external advisors, auditors, and regulators on tax matters.  

  • Build effective relationships with senior finance and business managers across ESB to help support ESB business objectives while ensuring appropriate tax control frameworks are operating effectively.  

Team Leadership  

  • Lead and develop the Corporate Tax team, fostering a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.  

  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to team members and ensure appropriate succession planning.  

 

Experience & Qualifications 

  • Professional tax qualification (e.g., CTA, ACA, ACCA) with significant post-qualification experience.  

  • Proven track record in corporate tax leadership within a large organisation or professional services firm.  

  • Deep knowledge of Irish tax legislation; a working knowledge of the UK tax system and familiarity with international tax principles and OECD guidelines.  

  • Experience in advising on complex transactions and implementing tax governance frameworks.  

  • Strong understanding of financial reporting and its interaction with tax.  

 

Key Relationships 

  • Internal: Audit & Risk Committee, Executive Director Group Finance & Commercial, Finance Leadership Team, Legal, Treasury, Business Unit Executive Directors and Senior Leaders. 

  • External: Tax authorities (Revenue and HMRC), external advisors, auditors. 

  

Location   

This position will be based in 27 Fitzwilliam Street Lower, Dublin 2 (with occasional travel to other jurisdictions as required).   

 

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.
