Position Description


The Power Quality Technical Specialist is a leader in his/her specialised field providing technical advice and support to ESB's Distribution, Transmission and Generation businesses as well as providing consultancy services about power quality concerns to external and international customers. 
He/she is responsible for the timely resolution of customer's power quality concerns. System phenomena, which may be perceived as power quality problems include, but are not limited to; momentary outages, voltage transients, harmonic distortion, anomalous voltage magnitude or frequency which are steady-state, intermittent, or single occurrences.  Also responsible for managing technical aspects of power quality work programmes and projects involving the design, operation, maintenance, and refurbishment of generation plant and/or distribution and transmission networks
 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Responsibilities of this role will include but are not limited to;

 

  • Lead and provide power quality guidance and expertise including project-managing and carrying out and documenting power quality studies
  • Influence technical aspects of design engineering services including undertaking design studies, design reviews of contractor (IPP’s) designs, feasibility studies and fault investigations to the required standard and specifications
  • Manage power quality projects from inception including feasibility studies, environmental assessments, consenting, developing specifications, evaluating tenders, undertaking design reviews, procurement, contractor selection, supervision of installation and provision of commissioning services before handover to client as required
  • Responsible for the timely resolution of customer's power quality concerns. System phenomena, which may be perceived as power quality problems include, but are not limited to; momentary outages, voltage transients, harmonic distortion, anomalous voltage magnitude or frequency which are steady-state, intermittent, or single occurrences.
  • Provide power quality assistance to customers for the purposes of load growth, load retention, and customer satisfaction. Primary focus is on identifying and solving complex power quality related problems with a goal of keeping large industrial customers and their supply chain's manufacturing and processing lines operating at full capacity.  
  • Identifying and solving power related problems for smaller customers that are sometimes related to life safety, e.g., stray voltage problems.
  • Assists Asset Management, Operational Control and Customer Delivery in evaluating various system or end-user compatibility issues. 
  •  Conduct investigations beyond the power quality meter. The process includes evaluation of the issue, installation of appropriate monitoring equipment (possibly on energized conductors), analysis of data results, and preparation of reports
  • Make mitigation recommendations and communicate directly with other departments involved, as well as the end-use customer.
  • Lead the training and development of junior technical staff within the team and other internal or external stakeholders ensuring continued expertise in the specialised area including documentation of internal and external training courses and quality procedures.
  • Keep abreast of developments in technology, customer business requirements, standards, and service offerings in the market 
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of the applicable rules and regulations on both sides of the revenue meter, such as but not limited to the Distribution Code, EN50160, TSO grid code, etc.
  • Contribute to review and upkeep of internal documentation e.g., standards and specifications, etc.
  • Monitor environmental, health and safety and quality aspects of project
  • Contribute to overall business development strategy

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

 

  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in the power quality area
  • Knowledge of relevant Policies & Procedures, Design Codes and Design Standards including Health, Safety and Environmental Standards and Legislation and Electrical Safety Rules
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and report witting skills
  • Excellent leadership skills

 

Desirable

 

  • Engineering Design

  • Familiar with Digisilent Powerfactory/PSS SINCAL or other power system analysis software, ION Meters & related software

 

 

Qualifications

 

Essential

 

  • A relevant professional qualification or relevant experience 
  • A full driving licence 

 

Desirable

 

  • Membership of Engineers Ireland

 

 

Reporting to

 

Power Quality Manager, ESB Networks

 

 

Location 

 

ESB Networks, Dublin, Cork or Limerick.Tailored working arrangements may be feasible and will be positively considered within the operational requirements of the role. National and International travel may be a feature of this role.

Salary

 

Starting at €65,000+ per annum
