Position Description


Applications are invited for the positions of Project Director Offshore and Onshore Wind, Solar and Hydrogen Asset Development within Generation and Trading.


The Offshore Wind, Onshore Wind and Hydrogen Asset Development teams are tasked with identifying, acquiring, developing and managing new investment opportunities on behalf of ESB Group. These teams will play an integral part in ESB’s net zero ambition by 2040 and will contribute significantly to ESB’s renewable energy target of 5GW by 2030, while also developing long term storage and Hydrogen projects. These teams, within Generation and Trading have successfully developed, or is in the process of developing a number of projects in the UK and Ireland, and is actively seeking to acquire or develop further projects. The teams’ activities comprise identifying and developing opportunities to enhance and expand the generation portfolio to achieve the ESB growth targets.

These teams are currently developing a number of projects and longer-term options in Ireland and the UK, across various different technologies such as Offshore Wind, Onshore Wind, Hydrogen and long duration Energy Storage in partnership with other units across G&T and ESB. A large number of sites have been identified and are being progressed in Ireland while in the UK, the teams manage the origination and development of numerous projects. In addition to origination, these teams are also tasked with acquiring projects across Ireland and UK.


The successful candidates will be responsible for leading the development of offshore wind, onshore wind, hydrogen and energy storage projects for ESB. These Project Directors will work closely with team members across the various business units in ESB. These are critical roles within the overall teams as the successful candidates will oversee large and complex projects ensuring that these are progressed in line with delivery strategy for ESB. The successful candidates will be highly motivated, innovative, commercially driven and have a track record of successfully realising business cases within ESB.  



Key Responsibilities


  • Provide leadership and direction to assigned project teams in the delivery of offshore wind, onshore wind, hydrogen and long-term energy storage projects from early development phase;
  • Development, management and responsibility of the business case for assigned projects;
  • Ensure commercial focus and rigour is brought to business cases right from project inception;
  • Work closely with the Commercial and Finance teams to ensure the projects are being optimised from inception/acquisition right through to financial close;
  • Champion Safety across the projects by updating and implementing the programme safety management strategy and managing implementation of this strategy across all projects;
  • Promote and foster a strong team culture and open and transparent communication within the project team and throughout G&T;
  • Ensure effective delivery of associated projects in line with ESB’s internal rigorous project management methodologies (as applicable), achieving a consistent high standard of output from the project team which meets all technical, commercial, legal procurement and programme requirements;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the procurement and contract strategy and co-ordinate the various contracts required for each project;
  • Manage stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally;
  • Ensuring that all project risks are continually assessed, reported and managed in line with ESB’s governance systems;
  • Regular reporting to the relevant management team and the relevant Project Boards, ensuring that the Board Members are informed of relevant risks and issues across the programme and that required decisions are taken in the necessary timeframe;
  • Be fully informed of industry issues which may impact on the choice of plant and ensure that this information feeds into the decision-making process.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience




  • Strong commercial focus through having a clear understanding of the business case for large renewable/storage projects;
  • Financial skill to appraise project returns and profitability.
  • A track record in delivering projects and new business development initiatives, with relevant experience in managing the development of energy generation projects;
  • Experience of working from own initiative, taking ownership of work/projects and motivating team members to deliver team objectives or projects.
  • Ability to clearly plan and communicate the requirements to progress specific projects or new initiatives
  • 3rd level qualification in engineering, business or finance.
  • At least 7 years postgraduate experience;
  • Understanding of power (particularly renewable) generation business.




  • Knowledge of energy generation technology and experience of working with these technologies.
  • Knowledge of the energy market and regulatory supports in Ireland and UK
  • Knowledge of procurement procedures.







A primary Engineering, Business, Commercial or Finance degree.




Project management qualification and/or other business management qualifications that may compliment the essential/desirable knowledge, skills and experience listed above.
