Position Description


Asset Development is tasked with identifying, developing and constructing new investment opportunities on behalf of ESB Group. The Flexible Technology Development unit within Asset Development has successfully developed and is in the process of developing a number of projects in the UK and Ireland. Asset Development activities comprise identifying and developing opportunities to enhance our portfolio to realise our Brighter Future strategy. Projects are managed through development through construction to commercial operation.


Flexible Technology Development is currently developing a number of projects in Ireland and the UK, across various different flexible generation technologies (eg aeroderivative turbines) and system support technologies (eg synchronous compensation and long term storage).


The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the origination of new system services projects including establishing strategic location, technocommercial feasibility of projects, competitor analysis and investigating technology areas.  The role will involve working closely with team members across the various business units in ESB. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, innovative, commercially driven and have a track record of successfully delivering projects and initiatives within ESB.  



Key Responsibilities


The key responsibilities include the following:


  • Lead a function with responsibility for development of new business opportunities on existing ESB sites, greenfield sites and acquisitions;
  • Identify fit of new technologies into market along with assessment of licensing, planning, technical, regulatory, market and commercial issues
  • Identify potential routes to market and develop appropriate influencing strategies in a changing market
  • Assess potential acquisitions and bid processes as appropriate
  • Champion Safety across the projects by supporting the implementation of safe and Sound, the project safety management strategy and ensuring implementation of this strategy across all projects;
  • Promote and foster a strong team culture and open and transparent communication within the project team and throughout the ESB AD business unit;
  • Ensure effective delivery of development options achieving a consistent high standard of output from the project team which meets all technical, commercial, legal requirements;
  • Manage stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, including interfacing with the Grid System Operator, potential OEMs and other market participants
  • Ensuring that all project risks are continually assessed, reported and managed in line with ESB’s governance systems;
  • Be fully informed of industry issues which may impact on the choice of plant and ensure that this information feeds into the decision making process.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience




  • Ability to critically assess technologies/opportunities with inputs from highly diverse experts such as technical, environmental, regulation, market analysis and financial
  • Experience of working from own initiative, taking ownership of work and motivating team others to achieve objectives or projects.
  • Strong understanding of market operation and evolution including licensing, system services payment models, grid code and their impact on project business cases
  • Understanding of industry trends and impacts on skills to assess projects and the ability to summarise the key parameters of a technology/opportunity.
  • 3rd level qualification in engineering or equivalent.
  • At least 8 years postgraduate experience.
  • A track record of project experience.
  • Experience of negotiations and commercial ability.




  • Knowledge of various flexible support technologies such as storage and flexible thermal and experience of assessing these technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience of planning permission and other permitting processes
  • Knowledge of the energy market and regulatory supports in Ireland and UK
  • Financial skill to appraise project returns and profitability.
  • Understanding of power generation business.







  • A primary Engineering degree or equivalent.




  • Project management qualification and/or other business management qualifications that may compliment the essential/desirable knowledge, skills and experience listed above.





The position will be located in ESB Head Office Dublin and will entail business travel. ESB is committed to offering flexibility in ways of working and we call that Smart Working – combining digital tools with a culture of trust and empowerment to enable flexible and remote ways of working.​#


Based on the operational requirements of the role, smart working arrangements will be agreed between the Line Manager and the successful candidate based on the needs of the specific role, the individual and the team.

The successful candidate will report to Manager Flexible Technologies, Asset Development.  




€63,000 - €74,000
