Position Description  

 

Asset Development is tasked with identifying, developing and bringing to construction new investment opportunities on behalf of ESB Group. The Renewables and Dispatchable Energy teams within Asset Development have successfully developed and are in the process of developing a number of projects in the UK and Ireland and are actively seeking to acquire or develop further projects in both Ireland and abroad. Development activities comprise identifying and developing opportunities to enhance and expand the generation portfolio to achieve the ESB growth targets – bringing the projects from Concept Stage through to Financial Investment Decision. 

  

The successful candidates will be responsible for leading the development of Assets in Flexible Generation, Battery Energy Storage Systems and System Services portfolios, working closely with team members across the various business units in ESB. The successful candidates will be highly motivated, innovative, commercially driven and have a track record of successfully delivering projects.   

  

Key Responsibilities 

  

  • Provide leadership and direction to assigned project teams in the development of projects from Concept phase through to Final Investment Decision followed by handover to the construction team. 

  • Oversee the assessment and development of new business opportunities such as brownfield/greenfield sites, application of new technologies and on occasions potential acquisitions. 

  • Champion Safety across the projects by leading implementation of the safety management strategy across all projects. 

  • Development, management and responsibility for the business case for assigned projects. 

  • Promote and foster a strong team culture and open and transparent communication within the project team and throughout the ESB AD business unit. 

  • Ensure effective project delivery in line with ESB’s internal rigorous project management methodologies, achieving a consistent high standard of output from the project team which meets all technical, commercial, legal procurement and programme requirements. 

  • Ensure commercial focus and rigour is brought to each project. 

  • Oversee the development and implementation of the procurement and contract strategy for each of the projects and co-ordinate the various contracts required for each project. 

  • Manage stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, including interfacing with the power and gas grid System Operators and supporting the acquisition of necessary permits, authorisations, planning and connection agreements. 

  • Ensuring that all project risks are continually assessed, reported and managed in line with ESB’s governance systems. 

  • Regular reporting to ESB AD management team and the relevant Project Boards, ensuring that the Board Members are informed of relevant risks and issues across the programme and that required decisions are taken in the necessary timeframe. 

  • Be fully informed of industry issues which may impact on the choice of technology and ensure that this information feeds into the decision-making process. 

  

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

Essential 

  • 7 years relevant experience.  

  • A track record in delivering projects and new business development initiatives, with relevant experience in managing the development of energy generation/storage projects. 

  • Experience of working from own initiative, taking ownership of work / projects and motivating team members to deliver team objectives or projects. 

  • Analytical skills to assess projects and the ability to summarise the key parameters of a project. 

  • Ability to clearly plan and communicate the requirements to progress specific projects or new initiatives in the project development area. 

  • 3rd level qualification in engineering or equivalent. 

  • Experience of negotiations and commercial ability. 

  

Desirable 

  • Knowledge of energy storage and generation technologies and experience of working with these technologies. 

  • Knowledge of the energy market and regulatory supports in Ireland and UK 

  • Knowledge of procurement procedures. 

  • Financial skill to appraise project returns and profitability. 

  • Understanding of power generation business.

  • A primary Engineering degree or equivalent.

  • Project management qualification and/or other business management qualifications that may compliment the essential/desirable knowledge, skills and experience listed above.

€71,976 - €84,677 per annum
