MV Substations Design Specialist
Position Description
The MV Substations Design Specialist role within the Underground Networks team is responsible for developing and maintaining design standards, material specifications and functional specifications required for the lifecycle management of the entire underground MV network. The role involves the provision of specialist support to ESB Networks project and customer delivery in their project and fault response work.
A key responsibility in the role centres around the governance of ESB Networks MV Substation material, design and construction standards to ensure we maintain a resilient network. The MV Substations Design Specialist also provides, and supports, the development of innovative network design solutions as ESB Networks Asset Management supports the provision of a resilient network than will meet the demand of increased renewable connections to the network along with enabling our customers to transition toward the electrification of heat and transport in the home.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop MV Substations standards & specifications for the full lifecycle of the MV network to ensure all customer connection, system improvement, asset replacement, maintenance and fault response requirements are met.
- Support Underground Networks Asset Manager in assessing and appropriately mitigating ESB Networks MV asset risks in public safety, staff safety, environmental, legal/regulatory, reputation and continuity areas.
- Support ESB Networks Project and Customer Delivery organisation in fault investigations, material/type fault issues and substation design/standard enquiries.
- Progress innovative technology solutions in collaboration with Industry collaboration forums and research institutions to meet the challenging targets set in ESB’s Net Zero 2040 Strategy.
- Support the development and implementation of MV commitments made to the CRU in PR6 (including ongoing reporting and the future preparation of PR7 submissions).
- Ensuring that support is provided to all project delivery, maintenance (planned and fault) and environmental assessment areas supporting ESB Networks
- Mentor underground network team colleagues and represent underground networks asset manager at meetings/events where required
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- 10 years’ experience in Power Utility industry
- Honors Level 8 Engineering Degree or equivalent
Desirable
- 10 years’ experience in MV Substations, Asset Management, Design, Maintenance or Construction with demonstrated leadership in either managing an engineering team or fulfilling a key specialist role in one of these areas
- Electrical or Civils Engineering degree qualification
This position will be based in a mix of Leopardstown (or other ESB depot) and work from home in line with Underground Networks Smart Working Charter

The successful candidate may work flexibly within their jurisdiction with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration on at least one anchor day per week. All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.

Salary
€71,000 - €84,000 per annum.
