Position Description

 

The energy industry is undergoing major change, to meet the needs of a changing society, with accessible, affordable consumer electricity technologies (generation, storage, heat, transport), an ambitious decarbonisation agenda, a knowledge and information technology centric economy, and increasing social peer-to-peer commerce.  In particular, the Climate Action Plan is driving changes to the way that the Electricity Network is being developed and managed and to customer behaviour in connecting to it

 

A number of vacancies have arisen in the Distribution Planning and Customer Access Team for Network Planners who will be responsible for planning the medium and long term reinforcement requirements of the Distribution System, planning the connection of new customers to the Distribution System and in the development and approval of planning standards, policies and procedures, and the implementation of approved planning standards to meet customers’ needs and enable Irelands transition to a low carbon energy future.  

 

 

The roles involve the analysis of the MV and 38kV Distribution Networks to determine the optimum method of connection for new customers and the reinforcement requirements to allow for demand growth on the system, and interaction with various internal and external stakeholders.

 

Team members in Distribution Planning and Customer Access will work closely with others across the full Planning function and other functions within Asset Management and with members of ESB Networks Delivery Organisations to achieve delivery of new connections to the Distribution System.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Plan the development and reinforcement requirements of the MV and 38kV distribution networks in accordance with defined planning standards
  • Carry out studies to determine Least Cost Technically Acceptable (LCTA) connection methods for new demand customers seeking connection to the distribution network
  • Utilise load flow software (SynerGi Electric/Sincal/PSSE) to determine connection methods and suitability of various reinforcement options
  • Complete Investment Appraisals and Technical Approval documents as required 
  • Assess the impact of new loads with a disturbing aspect on existing networks and make recommendations to mitigate the impact
  • Preparation of medium term MV Area plans
  • Preparation of national HV Investment plans
  • Preparation, development, and implementation of planning related standards and polices, as required. 
  • Gain and maintain knowledge in new technological advancements in the RES, flexibility, system operations areas and market/regulatory developments
  • Stakeholder engagements with internal staff and external bodies
  • Carry out other planning duties as determined by team needs

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

  • 2-3 years relevant experience (consideration may be given to relevant further education)
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • High level of commitment and excellent interpersonal skills
  • A commercial mind-set with effective analytical skills
  • Ability to act independently and take initiative.
  • Ability to understand and make decisions based on the relationships between financial, safety, and technical risks.
  • Can analyse networks using modelling software to determine network parameters under various conditions.
  • Familiar with MS Excel based spreadsheet tools & SharePoint

 

 Desirable

  • Good broad understanding of Distribution Network technologies, sufficient to assess the suitability of configurations for proposed connections and assess planning standard proposals for implementation.
  • Can prepare Investment Appraisal documents setting out the project drivers, assessment methodology and preferred solution based on financial and technical criteria.
  • Can perform financial analysis using lifetime cost projections for various connection proposals and network reinforcement proposals.
  • Proven experience of analysing networks using medelling software to determine network parameters under various conditions.
  • Familiar with MS Excel based spreadsheet tools   & SharePoint
  • Experience in coding languages such as Python, SQL, etc.

 

Qualifications

 

3rd Level qualification (Technical Engineering Qualification is preferred) or equivalent work experience.  

 

Location

 

The position will be based in Leopardstown Road, Dublin. Wilton, Cork or Rosbrien, Limerick. Flexible working arrangements will be considered.
