SCADA Technician, Telecoms, South-Central
Position Description
Telecommunications are transforming our lives in the way we live and work and are essential to the remote management of systems and assets. ESB's Networks Telecoms group has over one hundred staff providing the critical operational telecom networks needed to deliver the broadband and data circuits required to control the distribution, transmission and generation systems.
Networks Telecoms deliver this by operating and managing the largest private Telecoms Network in Ireland and are among a leading group of European utilities building our own private LTE (Long Term Evolution) Network. These initiatives are a critical part of our move to Smart Networks and the digitisation of ESB.
This position will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work and develop in a busy Energy Automation department in ESBN Telecoms.
ESB will provide development and learning in the areas of:
- SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
- Energy Metering -- for Independent Power Providers such as windfarms, solar and renewable energy providers
- PLC – Power Line Carrier
The position will enhance the following skills:
- Control and automation technologies – SCADA/Telemetering
- Revenue Energy Metering
- Power Line communications
- AC and DC power systems
- Communication technologies – IEC SCADA protocols, MODBUS.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with 24V and 48V DC Power Systems
- Work with Current Transformer (CT) and Voltage Transformer (VT) systems.
- Maintain a strong safety, quality and performance culture and maintain OHSAS accreditation.
- Install and support a range of SCADA equipment.
- Install and support a range of Energy metering equipment.
- Document SCADA and Energy Metering solutions for installation by third parties/contractors.
- Implement and support SCADA and Protection systems used to control the Electricity Network
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Experience with low voltage AC & DC systems.
- Experience with High Voltage environments
- General knowledge – electrical transmission and distribution systems.
- Experience in deploying, maintaining and fault finding electrical/electronic systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Full clean EU driving licence.
Desirable
- Familiarity with SCADA and Protection systems used in the Electrical Utility sector.
- Familiarity with Energy metering principles and technology.
- Experience with high voltage AC systems.
- Familiarity with IEC101 & IEC104 communication protocols.
- Familiarity working in a critical infrastructure environment.
- Working with power tools / Mechanical installation is considering as advantage.
- Qualifications in Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
- Advanced Level 6 Electrical Craft Certificate/A suitable Level 7 or higher qualification in Electrical, Electrical Services, Electronics, Mechanical or other suitable alternative qualification.
- A previous Electrical trades background would be an advantage.
Location
Networks Telecoms is based in Leopardstown, Dublin. Locations covered for this role are Ennis, Limerick, Roscrea, Tipperary, Waterford. Regular travel not limited to the South-Central region, is a feature of this role.

Salary
€49,000 – €58,000 per annum.
