Telecoms Professional - WAN Program Delivery
Position Description
Telecommunications are reshaping how we live and work, enabling the remote management of critical systems and assets. At ESB Networks, our Telecoms Group of over 100 professionals provides the essential operational networks that power the communication systems controlling Ireland’s electricity distribution, transmission, and generation infrastructure.
We operate and manage Ireland’s largest private telecommunications network, positioning ESB Networks among Europe’s leading utilities developing private mobile networks for operational use. These initiatives are central to our journey toward Smart Networks and the digitisation of ESB.
Within Networks Telecoms, the WAN Program Delivery Team leads the delivery and service ownership of advanced telecom technologies including DWDM and PDH/SDH migrating to MPLS-TP, fibre, Microwave Radio, SCADA UHF polling radio, Satellite-based SCADA, Operational IP, and the development of a future LTE network.
This team plays a pivotal role in building the resilient, high-performance communication infrastructure that underpins ESB’s transition to a smarter, more connected energy system.
Key Responsibilities
- Commission, configure, and maintain IP and Optical telecommunications infrastructure across complex and varied networks.
- Perform diagnostics and root-cause analysis of network faults, ensuring rapid resolution and minimal operational impact on IP and Optical networks.
- Apply rigorous safety, quality, and performance standards in all field and network activities.
- Drive improvement through innovation, technical knowledge sharing, and adoption of emerging telecom technologies.
- Conduct on-site work for network commissioning, fault restoration, and project implementation.
- Input and review technical specifications, tender documents, and supplier evaluations for telecom systems and services.
- Contribute to solution designs for MPLS-TP, IP and Optical networking.
- Prepare project documentation including capital approvals, design packages, and customer proposals.
- Produce and maintain health and safety documentation relevant to telecom operations.
- Liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders to support operational continuity and project delivery.
- Maintain accurate “as-built” records and configuration documentation for deployed systems.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- At least 3 years relevant experience
- Third level qualification in Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Hands-on knowledge of IP and Optical networking equipment from vendors such as Cisco and Nokia.
- Experience with fibre characterisation (OTDR, CD/PMD, OSNR), and supporting lab testing, NMS/EMS systems, and network monitoring tools.
- Experience with routing protocols (OSPF, IS‑IS, BGP, RSVP‑TE, Segment Routing)
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills in troubleshooting network faults for IP and Optical networks, supported by strong workflow/ticketing system proficiency.
- Ability to coordinate with field engineers and manage service migrations and upgrades.
- Experienced in documentation, stakeholder/vendor management.
- Full driving license as travel to site will be a feature of this role.
- Demonstrate a strong focus on safety in the workplace in compliance with Health & Safety rules, particularly as work may involve hazardous environments such as High Voltage substations.
- Self-motivated and capable of working on their own initiative.
- Strong team player.
Desirable
- CCNA certification (or equivalent) or progressing towards achieving this qualification.
- NRSI/ NRSII or progressing towards achieving this qualification.
- CONA (Certified Optical Network Associate) or/and CONE (Certified Optical Network Engineer).
- Business case preparation.
- Project Management qualification.
Location
ESB Networks Leopardstown Road.

All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.

Salary
€49,000 to €56,000 per annum
