Position Description
ESB Networks owns and operates the electricity distribution system operator in Ireland. We are responsible for maintaining and developing electricity network infrastructure to support all electricity customers and play a key role in enabling the delivery of critical national policies relating to housing, economic development and climate change. Our Networks for Net Zero Strategy sets out our ambition to achieve a net zero ready electricity network by 2040.  

 

Our customers and stakeholders have identified network reliability and resilience as a priority in their input to this plan. Electricity plays a vital role in people’s lives, and customers need to be able to rely on the electricity network to meet their current and future needs, particularly as they switch to new low-carbon technologies like heat pumps and EVs. Significant, ongoing investment in the network is necessary to maintain existing levels of service for customers. ESB Networks is committed to improving the network reliability and resilience of the distribution network.   

 

The Senior Storm Systems & Resilience Project Manager will play a pivotal role in enhancing ESB Networks’ resilience, preparedness and response capabilities to severe climate events through a coordinated approach across operations, systems, stakeholder engagement, and technical analysis. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development of the Storm Digital Toolkit, including predictive models, data analytics and visualisation. 
  • Support the coordination of the technical development and integration of storm-related systems that is underway across the organisation to ensure storm preparedness is considered in future roadmaps (e.g., OMS upgrade and plugins, SMART meter data, resource management tools). 
  • Maintain and evolve the Stakeholder Engagement Plan and register for storm preparedness and restoration, ensuring alignment with internal systems and external expectations. 
  • Co-ordinate with key external stakeholders and critical infrastructure customers to continue to support them in their preparedness for storm events.
  • Engage with international industry partners to identify storm restoration best practices and determine suitability for integration across ESB Networks.
  • Actively share expertise through organisation of, and active participation at, conferences and webinars with industry papers.
  • Identify, introduce and leverage new technologies, smart meter data, OMS and communications systems to improve restoration times and provide storm role holders with relevant and timely data.
  • Lead procurement exercises and draft tender documentation in accordance with ESB Networks’ procurement policies. Support the delivery of the PR6 networks resilience programmes and contribute to budgetary assessments.
  • Contribute subject matter expertise to Network Resilience and Post Storm reports, policy documents and consultation responses.
  • Contribute to the preparation of information on relevance governance, reporting issues, briefings or FOI/AEA requests as required by internal or external stakeholders.
  • Provide safety leadership in all interactions with team members, colleagues, customers, and other stakeholders. 

 

  

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • 7+ years relevant work experience.
  • 3rd Level engineering qualification or equivalent work experience is essential. 
  • Sound knowledge and specialist expertise of the electricity network, system operations and emerging technologies including a good knowledge and awareness of electricity distribution network assets and technology.
  • Excellent understanding of the key business challenges and opportunities for ESB Networks, our customers and our stakeholders as we transition to a lower carbon energy system in Ireland.
  • An inquisitive mind and willingness to challenge conventional models.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to carry out a cost benefit analysis (CBA) of innovation ideas and projects.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Proven ability to influence change at a senior level, both internally and externally.
  • Proven expertise in working collaboratively with partners and managing teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to act independently and take initiative.
  • A clear understanding of ESB Networks business and commercial operating model.
  • A full clean EU driving licence. Travel is required.

Desirable

  • Power system operations experience/knowledge.
  • Knowledge of smart technology, data analytics, cybersecurity, digitalisation, artificial intelligence.
  • Experience with ESB Networks’ IT systems; SAP, NMS, G/Net Viewer or Designer, and able to use MS-Office products.
  • Experience in risk management; the identification, assessment, mitigation, tracking, control and management of project risks.
  • Innovation experience/qualifications.

 

Location 
ESB Networks (Leopardstown Road Site), Sandyford, Dublin.

Reporting To
While initial appointment will be to the position of Storm Systems & Resilience Project Manager, rotation within ESB Networks will be a feature of the role.

Salary 
€71,000 - €84,000 per annum
