Commercial Specialist
Position Description
ESB Networks are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Commercial Specialist to join the Regulation & Commercial Team. This strategic role focuses on managing large-demand customer connections to the Distribution System and will play a key part in shaping the future of the company and the energy industry.
The successful candidate will act as a central point of contact throughout the customer connection application process, liaising with both internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure timely and effective customer connections. They will attend customer meetings to provide updates, address technical and commercial queries, and develop strong relationships. A strong understanding of both electrical and civil infrastructure requirements will be essential, alongside the ability to evaluate and apply appropriate charging methodologies in line with regulatory frameworks.
The role also includes ongoing resolution of stakeholder issues, support for IT system development, and contributions to the enhancement of enduring commercial and regulatory processes. The ideal candidate will bring engineering expertise, preferably from the electrical utility or infrastructure sector, strong commercial insight, excellent communication skills, and familiarity with project management and IT systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert support in facilitating connection applications for new and existing demand customers to the electricity distribution network.
- Act as a point of contact for external stakeholders, including large demand customers, ensuring consistent updates and transparent communication throughout the connection process.
- Collaborate with internal teams such as the Network Development Planning team and Delivery team to successfully manage applications through each stage of the application lifecycle.
- Analyse key electrical infrastructure requirements and understand the necessary components to deliver the required customer connections.
- Calculate connection charges in accordance with established commercial policies, ensuring compliance and fairness, prepare and issue formal connection offers, securing appropriate internal approvals prior to release.
- Represent the Commercial Team in cross-functional projects and working groups, including SAP enhancements, online application development, and updates to charging policy.
- Respond proactively to customer queries, providing support within and beyond the immediate business area, support regulatory updates to connection agreements, working closely with Legal and external bodies such as CRU.
- Build strong working relationships with internal Divisions, Regional Areas, and Planning Teams to promote a best-practice, end-to-end connection process.
- Monitor, track, and report on the progress of demand connection offers, including the preparation of ad hoc reporting as required.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- 3rd Level qualification or equivalent work experience and 5+ years’ relevant work experience in a commercial or technical role
- Knowledge of Ireland’s electricity network
- Strong knowledge and ability to work with key IT systems such as MS SharePoint, Excel and PowerPoint and excellent commercial acumen.
- Strong stakeholder management skills when dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge and ability to influence decision making in relation to connection offer, charging policies and processes and strong communication, presentation, interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and solve complex policy issues, while developing new lean business processes, proven ability to manage project work and work effectively within a team.
Desirable
- Degree in Mechanical or Electrical engineering.
- Experience of the electrical network and the electrical infrastructure required to provide customer connections.
- Commercial focus including a detailed understanding of the Distribution systems electrical network.
- Experience dealing with grid connection offers and modifications to connection agreements.
- Experience dealing directly with customers and stakeholders and providing guidance and specialist support to teams across a large business.
Location is flexible and will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Salary
€57,000 - €68,000 per annum.
