Lead Offshore Sub-Station Engineer
Position Description
The successful candidate will be an experienced Electrical Engineer who will be responsible for leading the development of offshore windfarm sub-station solutions for various projects in development. They will work as part of a team on the ongoing development of a number of offshore wind projects around the coast of Ireland and the UK, with the opportunity to join a specific offshore wind project team when projects reach this stage in their development. The candidate will be responsible for managing and coordinating tendering and contract award for offshore sub-station services and the management of these contracts. They will be required to engage with partners, contractors, OEMs and colleagues to influence a successful outcome for the projects. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, innovative, commercially driven and have a track record of successfully delivering projects of a comparable nature and scale.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities will include the items below:
- Lead the development and management of the electrical offshore substation element on projects
- Tender, appoint, manage and monitor EPC style contracts on behalf of the project Provide technical inputs on a range of feasibility concept design (Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study, planning consent submissions and provide technical solutions to issues, with limited oversight and advice project teams on technical matters at a strategic level
- Coordinate with OEMs, contractors, partners and other key stakeholders to develop competitive cost estimates for auction submissions
- Identify the most commercially appropriate contracting strategy to deliver the project to industry standards, safely and within budget
- Identify and manage risk within the projects
- Lead interactions with project interfaces and foster solution based collaboration with other teams
- Collaborate and coordinate with internal teams across ESB and external project partners to successfully deliver projects in a timely manner by acting as the lead electrical substation expert
- Lead consultations with key external stakeholders and statutory authorities as required on projects
- Maintain an up to date knowledge of relevant technology developments on offshore sub-stations
General
- Contribute proactively to the delivery of inherently safer wind farm projects;
- Integrate the EHS requirements set out by the project into the electrical aspects of the project; provide package support to their development where necessary;
- Input into a risk register, EHS assessments and engineering decision log for electrical matters and feed into wider project processes;
- Appropriate application of relevant standards and specifications in line with ESB and project expectations.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
The successful candidate must have:
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in HV power industry and/or in the electrical works associated with large scale renewable generation projects of which at least 2 years have been worked in the offshore industry
- Demonstrate a good understanding of Tendering, Tender evaluations, scoping, planning, design, costing, construction and commissioning offshore substations associated with offshore wind projectsDemonstrated ability to manage large and complex contracts with knowledge of Engineering, Procurement, Contract & Install (EPCI) specifically for offshore substations topsides
- A strong understanding of the electrical requirements associated with the development of offshore wind project which can be used to help clients and partners make informed strategic decisions
- A professional manner with strong inter-personal skills, with an ability to communicate at all levels and deliver high performance results
- Strong stakeholder management skills and proven track record of managing internal and external stakeholders and leading successful public consultations
- Demonstrated ability to conduct efficient decision making and problem solving in collaboration with other key stakeholders.
- Strong organisational and structured approach to project management and commercial aspects of projects
- A flexible approach to work, especially where necessary to deliver on project requirements

- Full drivers’ licence and access to a car.

- Level 9 Electrical Engineering Degree or equivalent qualification.
- Chartered status in a recognised professional institution
- Project Management qualification.
Location
The position will be based in ESB E&MP’s Offices in Dublin or Cork.

The successful candidate may combine working from home within the Republic of Ireland, with attendance at base for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and may change as we learn about hybrid working. Site visits is also a feature of this role which will require a certain amount of travel within Ireland.
