Position Description


Generation Projects within the Engineering & Major Projects (EMP) directorate of the ESB has been established to develop all generation projects, both renewable and thermal projects, as well as managing overhauls and construction projects. Our projects range from major utility scale offshore and onshore wind farms, to solar PV and battery projects, to flexible generation gas and synchronous condenser projects. 


This involves working in partnership with Asset Development to develop projects as the business case evolves and progress projects based on risks and opportunities. Projects are expected to be developed from a number of sources, green field, brown field, re-powering, partnerships and acquisition opportunities. Given the differing requirements, EMP will develop flexible solutions to meet these requirements and is required to adapt to the changing environment of renewable project development.


Due to an increase in the volume of work associated with this programme of projects a vacancy has arisen for a Project Manager in EMP, Generation Projects. The Project Manager will be tasked with delivering Flexgen projects, reporting to the Thermal & Flexgen Manager.



Key Responsibilities


While the Project Manager may be rotated within Generation Projects to work across multiple projects and a variety of technologies initially the Project Manager will be responsible for delivering Flexgen projects which comprise thermal, synchronous compensators, batteries and any planned hydrogen fuel developments.


Key responsibilities include the following but not limited to:


  • Lead technical feasibility and assessment of concept opportunities
  • Progress technical assessment, interfaces and works required for key project infrastructure and connections such as gas, water and electricity connections.
  • Lead the tender evaluation process for the purpose of selecting preferred bidder(s) in line with the agreed contracting and procurement strategy for the project(s)
  • Lead technical negotiations with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and/or Contractors for the purpose of finalising supply and construction contracts to enable the delivery of projects
  • Take responsibility for managing the project schedule and costs in line with project master plan and business case
  • Implement the contracting strategy, - specification preparation, tender evaluation, negotiations – to maximise business case opportunities, with Asset Development and Procurement
  • Implement project management methodology for all Generation projects, providing consistent delivery standards through identification and implementation of clear roles, decision rights, and ensuring the right mind-sets to deliver project success.
  • Support Asset Development on getting projects into the relevant auctions: RESS, Capacity, DS3
  • Prepare reports, presentations, minutes, documents etc. as required in line with the project requirements
  • Undertake site visits as required
  • Manage third party consultants as required to support the delivery of project workstreams including managing the procurement process to select and appoint consultants



Knowledge, Skills and Experience




The successful candidate will have:


  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an energy or related sector
  • Experience with project management processes & project delivery methodologies.
  • Strong experience in leading the preparation of technical specifications 
  • A good understanding of the commercial and technical aspects of project design and/or construction 
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills 




  • Understanding the business case of the relevant technologies; Thermal; BESS & Synchronous Compensators
  • Understanding of the PSDP and/or CDMC processes
  • A good understanding of commercial contracts, including management of same.







  • Primary engineering level 8 degree in a relevant discipline and/or relevant work experience.

The successful candidate may combine working from home within the Republic of Ireland, with attendance at base (Engineering & Major Projects, Dublin Airport) for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and may change as we learn about hybrid working.]

This role will also involve extensive travel throughout the island of Ireland, visiting sites and potential contractors. Travel to the UK may also be a feature of this role.

€50,000 to €60,000 per annum
