Position Description

The HV Cables department is responsible for the design and project management of high voltage underground cable projects for ESB, EirGrid and other clients. Design & project management involves both conceptual and detailed engineering design, design safety management, project programming and commercial management. HV Cables is also responsible for technical and commercial inputs to the business development and bidding processes.


The role of the Surveyor/ Civil Technician involves working with a team of professionals delivering a range of planning, design, construction and management services for high voltage transmission engineering projects in Ireland and internationally. The role of Surveyor/ Civil Technician plays a lead role in the consenting process for new underground cables.


Key Responsibilities

The Surveyor/ Civil Technician is required to:


  • Provide surveying and draughting services on a wide range of engineering and building projects
  • Prepare drawings, maps and as-laid records
  • Undertake route selection studies from feasibility to detail design including the production of supporting documentation, reports and mapping
  • Provide technical guidance to team members in all aspects of cable route selection and planning
  • Engage in continuous professional development to expand knowledge and understanding of underground cable design, demonstrated in efficient and technically sound designs.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience



  • A minimum of two years’ experience in the route selection sector or equivalent
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD or similar CAD software
  • Site surveying experience
  • Hold a full driving licence and have access to own car
  • The demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • A flexible approach to work, especially where necessary to delivery excellent customer service.
  • Work well with other team members and actively participate in achieving the team’s targets;
  • Good interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • MS Office including good report writing skills



  • Knowledge or experience of hydrographic surveying would be an advantage
  • Experience in utility assets route selection, survey and design an advantage
  • Experience in the Utilities Surveying an advantage
  • Knowledge of the planning application process an advantage
  • Knowledge  in ArcGIS, MapInfo or other GIS systems is desirable





A suitable  third level qualification in surveying/engineering/construction tech. or equivalent work experience is essential.



This role is based in ESB E&MP Dublin Airport office but travel to project locations as required, is a key requirement of the role.
